I met him at a jam a few years back. A friend introduced us and we started talking shop. I could sense he was downplaying his situation. I started to connect the dots with his name and a few things he said. I had the "aren't you..." moment. He didn't have any of his fun toys and didn't play that night. Very pleasant guy.
I thought they were great! I discovered them around 2002 but never saw them live until this show (2017). I haven't seen any shows since the pandemic started, but I bought tickets for their upcoming show supporting The Sword. Here's a pic from the 2017 show:
The guy in front of me was really into both Author & Punisher and Zombi - he was head banging throughout both, while everyone else just stood there in a hipster-stupor...
I've never seen them but they are definitely on my bucket list. I'm still kind on the fence about 2020. It's such a different vibe than the rest of the albums. Breakthrough & Conquer needs to be the soundtrack to a training montage in the worst way, though.
That's cool you met him, and what a way to meet someone - nice that you sussed him out! I probably could have talked to him at the show I saw but I was too starstruck with Steve Moore lol
Actually, I think a lot of their albums are pretty different. Surface To Air is the one that pulled me in - I want to make music like that! It's like they hit upon a magic combination of bits and pieces. I was much less into Spirit Animal and Escape Velocity - I think I liked the simplicity of STA, with bass, drums and sequenced synths for the most part, those later albums seemed to have a lot of extra colors that I wasn't looking for lol - not that I didn't like them, more like they weren't what drew me in with STA. They hit me again with Shape Shift - I think that's what they were touring when I saw them, so I was really psyched! I also listened to a lot of their solo stuff - I got into a lot of the various refractions and permutations of the elements of their music.
I'm listening to Liquid Crystal, the release after 2020, for the first time now - thanks for getting me back into them! They are so amazing how they create these soundscapes with just two people. Seeing them live was really impressive, you never know how much is overdubbed on a studio recording.

I used to really be into phasers. I'm down to my Moog Phaser, and my Sketchy Labs Freak Shift, and I'm good. Oh, and SoundToys PhaseMistress, which I love.
Looks like it could work to counteract neck-dive?
