I agree with you to an extent. Of the four projects I'm currently playing with, and all of my past endeavors, the V4 with the 8x10 was more than enough, and often too much. Heck I'm gigging with my 25 watt B15 for a fair number of gigs now, but with my current original rock project the SVT and 8x10 are right at home. I can get it just loud enough that it breaks up if I dig in and probably would have been running my V4 in the red constantly. Not that that would have been entirely a bad thing, but I do like have a cleanish/dirty separation available.

The whole thing is a fraud. :smug: Look at the image that started this thread. The poor v4b is sandwiched between two v4's. Always the same. Us low enders trapped by the flashy guitars...

I'm real happy with my old V4b's, and luckily they aren't too hard to find. Not sure I'd buy a new one. I'd have to wait 30 years to see if it could withstand the rigors like the originals, and I'm too old to wait that long.

Do you think they should make a V4B-VR with 7027A as power tubes (since they are now available again), and respect the original voicing, or make it with 6550, as some vintage V4B are modded for ?
Mine is unmodded, but I've been wondering about the tone of a modded 6550 one.
A power section with 4 6550 would allow the amp to be a little more powerful, no ?

a 7027 is nothing more than a 6L6 with an extra internal connection. there are EXACTLY the same tube. if your tech tells you any different find a new tech. and besides, ampeg never used that extra connection anyway; they always wired V4/V4B sockets for 6L6's in the first place. my guess is back then they got a killer deal on a zillion 7027's and ran with them. so, if one springs extra $ for 7027's they're throwing their money away

if they reissue the v4b i Sure hope they make it 22" wide rather than it's ridiculous 26". not too many use a 26" wide cab anymore. at 22" it'd be 2" smaller than an svt, a lot lighter and a lot more manageable. i always found a v4b's width a big turn off, but not it's tone, omg. sitting atop a typical 1-15 they're very top heavy, visually

My questions was about 6550s.

if they made a v4b with a slightly larger power tranny (or add a filament tranny) to handle 6550's i'd be the first guy in line for one! regarding the 7027 myth it needs to be repeated often enough so that it goes away. it bugs me to see people wasting their money

No. That is dependent on the transformers/circuit design, the 6550s just offer a different tone. I preferred mine with them, but the comparison I've done was vs another amp, not the same amp with optimized for both tube types so it may not be a fair comparison.

I did the same except i had a preference for the original 7027s. I thought the amp with 6550s sounded a little smoother especially when driven into the red. The 7027 amp was a bit more agressive with more grindy overdrive. It wasnt as "wide" sounding but i liked it a little better.

I hope they decide to do an affordable true reissue of the v-4. Of all the amps ive had, i liked its tone the best.

Sorry i dont. The other thing i forgot about 6550s is that they are larger and on my amp they nearly touched the rear grille. The tolex near them was pretty crusty dry and lightly scorched. Just a cosmetic issue really, no biggie.

Man i want a stock v-4. Its one of few things i sold (twice) that i regret. :rolleyes::hmm:

I'm an old tube head fan from way back and I'm just dreaming here, but.... I would love to see a 30 lb 150 watt all tube Ampeg head. Until something like that shows up, I will have to stick with SS heads/combos. As far as the V4BH, I thought it sounded great but it was 100 watts and a little too heavy for me.
