Ampeg has a real punchy sound. And their cabs are made really well. But the amps that are worth getting are the higher end ones such as a SVT or 4pro (in my opinion).

how can you not like ampeg? its great stuff, well made, doesnt break down, looks good, sounds even better. they make something for everybody. if youre not impressed with a 4pro or one of their tube heads, youre just trying hard to "be different". ampeg rules.

I think "doesn't break down" is the current problem with Ampeg. They are dropping like flies.
what problems are people having that is causing them to "drop like flies"?

One dimensional? Yeah, OK. If an amp is one-dimensional, it ain't the amp.
eden has to be the most overpriced stuff ever. its definitely nice, but my god some of their stuff is just way too expensive.
Clamping them in tight racks that have zero space for cooling air. Can you say melt?

Only if you're buying new and that's consistent with most brands. I bought my D410XLT locally from someone on CL for $400 and it's in near mint condition. I've also seen guys selling whole rigs for a thousand.
I was diehard Ampeg user for a long time. I bought a new SVT-CL recently and it had a few problems. When I took it to get repaired I heard a lot of horror stories about the new Ampeg. They got it taken care of for me but it still makes me unsure of them now. I would suggest trying a GK to anyone thinking of buying a new Ampeg. Do your research and find out whos making quality stuff. It will save you a headache in the long run.
My SVT-4PRO / SVT-410HLF Rules. I use this more than my Eden 410XLT/Carvin B1500.
