Just in case anyone was wondering about the xlr/direct out from the PF500...... I recorded a live practice of a personal project last night. I went pre-eq and post-eq, just to try both options, straight to an old Peavey board and straight from there into pro tools. I played a Marcus Miller Sig Jazz (active), American Jazz (passive), and an SX PJ (passive).
I heard some complaints about the xlr/direct having a really hot signal. I didn't understand that because it has db pad. But I didn't have any problems with it. My drummer has a masters from MTSU in audio engineering and has worked in some pretty reputable studios. He's recorded me with a lot of different gear in the past and, as well as a bunch of other amazing gear in the studios, and he was thoroughly impressed with the PF500.
This is by far the best direct tone I've had. THE BEST. The clarity was really impressive. The post eq function worked great. The compressor really turned out to be a real treat too. At about 11 o clock it breaks up just enough to give you a little growl and sounds great recorded. The lows were really tight and not the slightest bit muddy. Low mids were clean and thumpy and the high mids realllllyyy cut thru. I mean really cut thru. And I had the mids set pretty much flat if not cut a little but. For those of you that slap I think you'll be impressed with the slap tones too. I bumped the bass a tad, mid selector on 2, and treble boosted just a hair and bam!! Awesome slap tone that recorded very clean.
I really can't say enough good things about this amp. I've played it live in severals situations with several different styles and with several different basses and it has been awesome in all areas. The recording test/ direct out test was my main concern, because I'll be using PA support a lot in my military band, and it passed with flying colors.
As far as the cabinet goes. I bought the 210. And I played with two guitars, drums, and a singer last and it was plenty loud. Were very good about practice volumes. We play lightly and like to keep the volume at a easy listening level. But we turned up towards the end and checked our "live performance sound", and the 210 had no problems keeping up. I had the gain set right 12 and most of the time 11 and I never had to go past 1 o clock on the master. And 1 o clock was a little too loud. Cab sounded great the whole time. No break up or trouble handling the higher volumes at all.
Soooo...... Another night with the PF500 and another win for Ampeg. I'm glad I waited!! Every time I play with this amp Im impressed. It does everything well. I'm finally 100% happy with a rig. It's a damn good product.
