Ampeg Rocket Bass Combos

I still haven't found a good comparison between the RB115 and the RB210 (I'm sure there is somewhere).
I own the RB115 and like it but it's a bit on the shy side regarding power in a live situation. That might also be because of the mellow, warm sound it produces, which I like, but it's not exactly cutting through.
So I've been thinking about getting a RB210 instead but I'm hesitant. Will I loose the warmth and how much more output will I actually get? Is it worth the swap?

Try SGT on, Grit -0, Lvl -Full. Only Ultra Hi On. Bass -11.00, MID- (12.30 ~ 2.00 ), Treble -(1.00~2.00).

And try raise the RB115 around 1 ft from floor and put a large foot carpet in front it.

Are you saying that the amps cannot adequately reproduce the fundamental, or humans can’t hear it adequately, or the whole of the band sound cancels it out, or am I misunderstanding you?

I think its a combination of all three - particularly in a band performance situation.
I think many cabs start rolling off their response to lower frequencies below 100 HZ.

In my experience a 1 x 15inch cab reproduces more of that fundamental frequency, than say a 4x10 cab - which is why 1x15 sound so deep and rich, whereas a 4x10 is louder and punchier as it handles the rest of the harmonics better.

If we look at the spectrum plot of a bass guitar hitting the low E note it looks something like this : -

If the Cab or the EQ setting reduces the 41Hz fundamental you have all those other harmonics coming through fine - in fact in this plot the fundamental is 15dB is quieter than the next harmonic - which is why in a sound reinforcement situation they low-cut everything except the kick below 80 Hz.

oh and to keep it relevant to the RB-210 - in a direct A-B comparison to my other rig (Ampeg 7 pro and 410HLF heritage) the RB-210 is good, but my big rig has more fundamental, but at band practice levels what i notice more is the dynamics headroom I have with the big rig compared to the RB-210.

I'm not dissing the RB-210 - it sounds great for what it is, but my big rig cost almost 3 times as much.

Last night I noticed some hiss from my RB110. Not much but it's there. With or without cables and bass connected. For me it's not a deal breaker though. In the model specs I saw this serie of amps has a S/N level around 80-84 dB. Thats not very hifi.

Are there more RB owners hearing hiss?

I just have to play my bass and stop listening to the silence......:bassist:

In my experience new speakers often hiss for the first hours (sometimes several) of use. Breaking-in thing it would seem.

The first Rb112 i bought has loud hiss issue, exchange with Rb115 and current second Rb112 are hiss free except SGT engage(tiny hiss, no bother at all).

About the speaker/driver breaking in thing, i found the low end on my RB112 sound tighter with loss some LOW than before after 6 months usage. Turn up a bit Bass just make some LOW-mid voice sound get muddy especially on E string.
Unlike my previous combo, Rumble200(15' driver), Hartke KB15 (15' driver) and Tech21 VT200 (12' driver), once settle in , the low end become rounder and the high get smoother.

Do i have hearing problem myself ? If above issue/syndrome are true on Rb112, i will recommend RB115 instead RB112. Because the Low end voice on Ampeg are different than Rumble/Hartke/Vt200.

I do not have a comparison, but in retrospect I wish I had bought the 12 or the 210.

The 115 is just too heavy on the bottom for my taste. In an extreme way. As in, the only way I'm satisfied with it is to turn the bass knob ALL THE WAY DOWN. It's boomy and the bottom end is just hugely untamed. I can tame it somewhat with my HPF but I bought it to leave in a rehearsal studio so I rarely bother setting up the HPF. It's just easier to pull out all the bottom.

I guess I'm just not a 15 kinda gal.

That said, it keeps up with a nine piece band in rehearsal. I do have to crank it pretty far to get there, but it works for the purpose it was purchased for.

I'm looking at the RB210 to replace my current head/speaker setup. Please bear in mind that I'm not close to music stores that I can test drive the amp - so buying online, unheard. I'm wondering if the RB210 brings the same tonal characteristics as the SCR-DI? That box has been my favorite piece of kit for a few years now but is starting to show signs of age. I'm looking hard at the rest of my rig too, and I could kill a couple birds with one stone if the RB210 can bring that same tone. I haven't found anything else - and I've tried them all - that I like as much.

Thanks for any help!

I've wondered about this myself and found this. The SGT circuit might do it for you.

Ultra Hi engage and SGT grit on 8 oclck/ level on 3.30 along with dial back bass knob around 10 o'clock do help make it less boomy.

I have a SCR-DI for going ampless/DI and I find the 210 and the SCR-DI to be close enough

Although I do not have a Rocket Bass, my SCR-DI is a great alternative to an amp or to drive one. I am, however, not a fan of the Scrambler ;).

For sure SGT blows the Scrambler circuit out of the water. I have another OD on my pedalboard, but I am also working on a small board where the Scrambler would be a "good enough" drive
