Ampeg Rocket Bass Combos

My currently room practice combo is Tech 21 VT200 combo which I bought it home after side by side compare to Ampeg Micro SVT on 2018.
Will give a try on new RB112 and 115 once available on my local GC, since both sound really nice Ampegist tone on YouTube demo.
FYI the RB115 showed up in the inventory of my local GC just last night.

Waiting your test drive report .

Off topic.

Been own Rumble 200 combo in past, sound ok at medium volume, but at high volume , the output nothing improve and no big tone at all. Since both rumble 200 and new RB115 combo has similar design in weight, size and output, I hope this RB115 has no such issue which happened on Rumble 200.

Went down to GC and gave the RB115 a nice leisurely spin — I can’t say that it overall sounded too different than the 110, tho I really appreciated the addition of the effects loop where I hooked up the Boss PQ-3B I bought along to test out for adding a little more cut & sparkle (800hz, 1.9k) to the signal. That worked wonderful well … however I’m going to sit tight and save myself some bucks by getting the 112: the loop is what I’m after, and the possibility to add an extension cab hold no value for me as it’ll be strictly home music room used. Rather than pre-order via Sweetwater (who friday projected the 112 would be in within a week or so and assured me that there were first-delivery preorders still available) I’ll wait til they hit the retail sales floors.
OH and while I auditioned the amp using a GC-standard bow-and-arrow Player P with aged strings, I couldn’t resist the urge to try out that wacko Jackson X Series Concert bass. WOW … but god that headstock!

My local store has the RB-108 , BA-110 and the Rumble 40 for the same price. I will probably go down and try them all out next weekend.

I’m leaning towards getting the Rumble 40 because of the 10” speaker and DI. I do love the Ampeg tone but I have a Sansamp BDDI I can chuck in front.

I know the Rocket is the new hotness but how does it stack against the Rumbles?

I sold my Rumble 40 and bought the Rocket 110. I’m very happy with that decision. I have a VT pedal that I sometimes have on and with or without it you get the Ampeg tone. I preferred the onboard overdrive more on the Rumble but the Ampeg doesn’t fart out as easily when you pull out all the stops on the pedals and the volume.

No complaints about either amp. Im happy because I wanted an Ampeg tone without spending SVT money. They’re both solid amps, you just have to ask yourself if you want to sound like a Fender or an Ampeg.

@Soberglitch what did you like more about the Rumble's overdrive as compared to the RB's SGT? I always have some amp overdrive when I play and found I could never get the Rumble to not sound a little fizzy. From what I've heard in the demos so far, the SGT has more of a growl than a fizz. Can you describe how the two overdriven tones compare?

I’d say the Rumble is a lot brighter, crunchier and aggressive, kinda reminds me of a British rock setting on a modeling amp. The Rocket is more mellow and warm but definitely closer to a tube growl. On second thought the overdrive might be kinda a wash, they’re just different. I prefer the overdrive from my VT pedal over both so I don’t really use the onboard settings a lot. The Rocket does sound a lot better with pedals IMO.

It's too bad they don't have the RB-110 to compare to the Rumble 40 since these are the most comparable in terms of features and size. I owned the Rumble 40, but sold it about a year ago and I'd really like to hear people's experiences on how the sound of these two compare. @bassegg I would like to hear your thoughts after you've compared them.

Yeah, they do have the RB110 which I will try out too. Unfortunately it's a bit above budget. I'm in NZ and we tend to get shafted price-wise down here.

NZ prices:
Rumble 40 = $449
BA110 v2 = $399
RB108 = $399
RB110 = $599

So, that's ~$429 USD for the RB110 which is $249 at Sweetwater.

Wow, that's a huge jump in price from the RB-108 to the RB-110! Here in Canada, the difference between those two is $100, but our price is half of those you gave so I suppose it makes sense that the difference is also half. It's interesting that the Rumble 40 is $150 cheaper than the RB-110, where in Canada it's only $40 cheaper. Seems the Ampeg products are generally higher priced than the Fender products in NZ compared to Canada. In any case, happy shopping and I look forward to hearing how they compare.

Speaking of zZounds...my 61st birthday present is on its way!!! Film at eleven.

Happy Birthday!
My 61st was 6 months ago but my RB112 arrived today from Sweetwater!

Wow Sounds like an Ampeg and its been 40 years since I last used their products ( SVT Head with two JBL 15's).

Dark, full, deep tone but tweakable with the ultra HI, Mid, and Treble controls.
I even like the SGT and I rarely use overdrive.
Nice work Yamaha .... uh I mean Ampeg .... errr .... YamaPeg, Ampaha

Thanks so much, WillieB, I appreciate the kind wish. Great post with an interesting review. I have to add an addendum to previous post due to FedEx delivering the combo tomorrow now instead of today. No problem, but I was looking forward to opening it up tonight.

Sounds as if you’re liking the 112. Besides the sweet tone, was there anything that caught your attention? I’m more of a clean tone player too, but I’m curious about the SGT circuit.

If you haven’t signed up yet, drop by the Combo Club and with a pic of your new beauty and a request for a membership number, I’ll ring ya right up. That goes for all you combo owners out there. Come join us as we pay tribute to the combo bass amp; much like bass players...under-appreciated but always ready to drive the band!

Well the SGT circuit with Grit and Level controls allows a wide range of adjustment from "I don't hear no grit" to " Oh you filthy beast!".
So that's nice.
My first combo amp was way back in the late 70's. A Yamaha B115. Nice amp ... bulkier than the rb112.
On my first post I said last ampeg was the svt jbl 15's in early 80's So now I have ampeg tone but dropped
about 200lbs in gear weight! YES!

It’s New Amp Night! The combo rolled in this morning, but wasn’t opened until after supper. I haven’t played it yet, that’s coming up, but I did take a few pics after pulling it out of the plastic. I think it was mentioned earlier in this thread, but this amp is beautiful; way better looking than the images you’ve seen here or elsewhere.

It’s quite lightweight, looks well-built, and is begging to be played. Yamaha, I rolled the dice on ya and am expecting a winner! I’ll report this weekend if I can.
