Ampeg Rocket Bass Combos

Gotcha. I have a RB-112 myself and I like it for the most part. It's got a bit of a hiss that seems to be linked to the treble eq. When I cut the treble all the way, the hiss disappears. The hiss gets louder the more I turn up the knob. It's not terrible, but definitely noticeable, IMO. Overall though, nice little combo. :)

I have no idea how loud the hiss from your Rb112, but , my first unit Rb112 has notable annoying hiss when volume just set at noon (flat EQ, without SGT/Utr HI/Utr Lo engage) ! Then i move to RB115 but not meet my tone.

The second piece RB112 i bought are hiss free until volume point to 3 oclock (as good as my Tech21 VT 200 Combo). There are tiny hiss thing come out once the SGT mode engage but acceptable.

I believe the RB line has vary production QC issue .

The hiss is loudest when the treble knob is past 12:00, with ultra high and sgt engaged. I hear it even at very low volumes, but not too noticeable once you play.

I’m trying to decide between a 110 and 112. Anyone got experience of real world volume difference? Could the 110 keep up with quieter drums for Motown type stuff?

I usually have to run my RB-112 at around 75% volume when playing with our drummer and guitarist. The drummer is playing a very conservative kit but is a fairly hard hitter. Guitarist/singer is playing through an Orange Crush 20 watt amp not even at half volume. We play a lot of 60s and 70s stuff (Beatles, Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Monkees, Tom Petty, etc), so it's relatively mellow in general. I don't have much headroom left volume-wise with the RB-112 and a passive P, J, or Beatle bass. So in short, I would probably not be heard with anything less, including the RB-110. I need nearly all of those 100 watts. Don't know if this is of any help to your situation, but that's been my experience thus far.

Is there notable hiss when volume at 2 o'clock, flat EQ , no ultra hi/lo and SGT engage ?

My second rb112 only has slightly hiss once SGT (grid point 1, level at 4.5 point ) , ultra high engage , treble at 2 o'clock and volume at noon. Hiss sound similar to my Yamaha TRBX 504 bass guitar switch to active mode. So, this hiss level are acceptable .

Noticeable if I'm not playing. Not very noticeable if I am playing. I like the tone of the combo enough to tolerate it. The hiss gets more pronounced with ultra hi, SGT, or boosted treble eq. I don't hear the hiss through the PA when using the DI out to FOH either (which is good!).

I have an RB112 and I use it for rehearsals with one of my bands (guitar, drums, vocals & bass) and it is perfect in that situation. We do not rehearse at very loud volumes though. I don't think I'd go any smaller than that if I was gigging with it. I do have a show coming up in a small room and I was thinking of trying it out.

Go for it. With PA support, it'll do anything. You can hear yourself over a drummer, and the DI is clean.

Haven't read everything, but I got a pretty neat sound with more high mids with bass at 11, mids at 3, treble at one, ultra low engaged, horn off. Ernie Ball Cobalt flats with geezer P pickup.

THANK YOU for this -- that setting is a sonic revelation for me!
I would never dreamed of engaging the ultra lo and cranking the mids in order to gain high midrange, but damned if it doesn't make it so.
It'll take a little more a/b listening, but it may make my Para-EQ in the effects loop unnecessary.

Cool! Later I'll hook up my hpf around 60 hz with different bass settings but keeping the high mid thing and see what happens.
