does anyone know what is the difference between these 2 cabs?

I am buying one of these.

I can get used USA model (2002) for cca 500E, or a new Made in China model for 1000E.


I think Ill rather go with the USA model, but I haven't tried it.

I tried the Chinese and I like it a lot.
As I've read here, the USA models seems to be better, so I guess I must like it even better then, right? :D

Some people find that the OSB 810 units are muted sounding like a blanket is over them. Others like them. I think that if you push this cab hard, the sound opens up a bit. What I don't like about OSB is that it can shatter if you drop it. Sometimes you see these cabs with the casters punched through the bottom.

I think that the newer China built cabs built with baltic birch plywood is a step up. If you can swing the cost of a new one, give it serious consideration.

Sorry, but what exactly is OSB you're talking about?

this "blanket muted sound" you mention - that's definitely not what I want.

I'm into clear sounding cabs with nice brights.

I don't like BWA BWA sound - I like ZING ZING :D

well, the money is not crucial in deciding which one I'll buy. I just want to get the kind of sound I like.

I would not hesitate to get the older USA model. They are the workhorse of the live music industry. The OSB box material has been discused numerous time here and is not a real issue with those who have them, and tere are thousands of them out there that way. I say save the $ and get the older one.

Its a Legal exchange of production. Every major US company does it. It takes away important craftsman jobs that are needed. Our dislike of all this should not be directed at China or Mexico or any other country and their peoples. For the greater part most offshore products stand the test of time well, you seldom can tell the difference in the end product. It matters how US companies regulate how well things get produced. OSB is a generic term for different products. Usually it is what they called chipboard. They glue together random flat wood chips to make the board. It looks like Invalid Link Removed under the vinyl. Invalid Link Removed is a closeup.

I think that you should take the time to check out the USA made cabinet and decide which best suits what you are looking for. When it comes to a cabinet, don't get hung up on where it is made.

The muted sounding OSB 810e's were made between 2000 and 2006. Any earlier, and despite having OSB, I think they sound great. Unfortunately the one you're looking at is a 2002, and while I know a couple of folks who favor the reduced treble, I'm not one of them. For me it's a no-brainer. Chinese with real wood and good sounding speakers.

I own an American ampeg 810 and to me its the best thing for rock or metal hands down. It's not that great for tapping and slap play but its rounder sounding than most other 810. Unfortunately time has caught up with me and I've been trying to sell mine because its brutal to move and am having no success. So keep in mind you will have a lot of trouble getting rid of it if you decide to down the road

Jimmy, maybe you can help here - I've read the statement several times "Several people like the darker-sounding OSB Cabs" but I haven't been able to find out why folks might say that.

I own an OSB 810 and I recognize that its not as bright as the birch, and yes its darker - but EQ settings can steer it away from anything resembling "a blanket covering the cab." Given a choice, I would go with birch...

BUT - I'm still curious why some may go for (and I'm paraphrasing/parsing adjectives here) "darker-sounding" OSB's? Not why its inferior, just why some prefer it. Style of music? YMMV? OSB=a unique tone?
