Ampeg SVT-8Pro vs. SVT-4Pro shoot out w/pics!!!

anything else about the svt-8pro? i'm seriously thinking about going to ampeg, and i'm looking at the svt-6 or svt-4 (favoring the 6), but the ability to drive two svt-810e's at 2 ohms just looks uber sick to me...lots of guys have given the svpcl preamp good reviews...so...anything new? anyone else care to chime in?

I'm using two svt-810e's with an SVT-4PRO and a SVP16000. Believe me it is awesome. I would go with the SVT-8 and keep that option opened.

I don't mean to derail this thread, but yanno, quality concerns aside...I hate to hear another American company like Ampeg has moved

Just so it is clear, there isn't an "Ampeg" company, and there has not been one for 40 years.

Ampeg as a company was sold to Selmer, where it became a "brand". Then it went to Magnavox, then MTI, then St Louis Music. It was a "brand name" for each of those.

Loud Technologies bought SLM, and for Loud, "Ampeg" is most definitely "just a brand name", not a "company.

SLM has now been entirely absorbed into the existing Loud Technologies operation, and the only portion of SLM that still exists with a building and employees, etc is the guitar, violin and accessories division (guitar straps, picks, parts, etc plus Alvarez, Yairi, and Knilling).

This does not mean Ampeg will be crap, or whatever.

it DOES mean that there is now a total disconnect between the "pre-Loud" "ampeg brand" and what will come out now.

No designers are still employed that worked on Ampeg at SLM, MTI, Magnavox, etc. Any new products will presumably be entirely designed by Loud or by folks in china, i.e. folks who have no history with the brand.

Again, I am NOT saying new product will be any worse than before. But I WOULD expect it to be "different". That is almost inevitable.

So getting back to this shootout.... does the 8Pro SOUND better than the 4Pro and why? What was the tonal differance between the two that you could hear, using the SAME bottom? I am not concerned with any bells and whistles. Just the tone difference if any. Also...did you use a 4 or 5 string? Do you slap or finger or pick? Thanks!

I was interested in the SVT 4PRO. I tried it out liked it but I decided to refuse sadly. I don't think there will be any major production problems once the kinks are smoothed out for Ampeg out of Vietnam. But, I'm just astounded that prices will be the same as USA production giving more profit to Loud. I'm not against a profit but when Ashdown moved their ABM line to China, the ABM 500 went from $999.00 to $749.00, quite a significant decrease. I'm sure Ashdown is making more of a profit but they passed some of the savings to the customer. Loud Tech is not giving ANY break for the customer. That's their perogative but it's my choice not to support their business model.

I was a full ampeg endorcer for almost 20 years...I went with Genz Benz and Im real happy.. The Genz GBE1200 makes the svt4 look anemic in my opinion.. The Genz is louder , punchier, cleaner and/or dirtier depending on how you set it up.. I think it is less expensive and just a much of a great build..

Just got a new SVT8-pro from FedEx today. It's made in the USA!! I've only had about 15 minutes with it.. but so far.. so good. Great tone.. love the ability to get the overdriven tone at any volume.. It's loud.. running it through two Berg HT115's. However; I don't get quite the same feeling of ultimate horsepower I remember from something like the DB750 I used to have. I do feel like it's just as strong as say my QSC PLX2 amp I was running at 900 watts per channel into the Bergs. I also feel like I have a lot more power than I did with the Thunderfunk TF550B.. of course.. I should feel that way. So far.. I think it's the best lightweight digital amp I've played. The tone is RICH with all the tubey goodness harmonics.

So, Henry, are you still digging this amp?

Tom.

I don't care how it good it sounds, I won't buy one or any other ampeg gear not made in the USA. Im sick of these maximize profits lets ship everything off to asia and screw american workers mindset of coporations these days. Don't know about you, but one of the major selling points of Ampeg gear was that it was made in America and employing Americans. I could bite the bullet and pay a little more for that--but I don't see their price points going down. And i'm sure their paying the workers the equivalent of 5 cents an hour with no health benefits or union protection. :spit:

I hope this move to asia comes back and bites them in the A**

I couldn't have said it better myself. IMO it has been hard to find anything American made that is worth anything anymore. Then you find Ampeg and you start to believe.....and now look.....its like Oh crap...they caught on too. We can pay our workers less and make the same money so we will have better profits. Meanwhile people are losing their jobs and beginning to be weary of their products. I believe there are two parts to a sale:
1. The sale
2. The service...and I don't call service having to wait for a part for weeks because it wasn't made in the US of A.

Ok, I'm off my soapbox now. :D But you know it would make a big difference if a great American company would take a stand and show the world that it is possible to succeed with a business in the USA by building great products w/top notch service, (I mean Ampeg wasn't/still isn't cheap) and giving Americans jobs with a sense of accomplishment.

+2 Well, at least we still have Mesa......and a one handful of the others that I can't think of right now.
