Ampeg SVT-II appreciation thread

In case anyone needs em, here's a link to the factory SVT-II updates and schematics: Invalid Link Removed

This link is a bit difficult to use the first time. The link is correct, you just have to click "free", on the first page, this will open another page on which you have to choose from which server you want to download the file (unimportant, there all very fast). Than you have to wait for about a minute, so rapishare can be sure you had a look at the commercials that are displayed on the current page, and then the download window should open automatically.

Kinda sounds like its a heat related issue. Is your amps fan still working?
Is the fan vent on the amps side being blocked by the rack case? (1/2" of side clearance works fine on mine)
Are you 100% sure your speaker cable isn't actually a guitar cord? (unscrew the ends and double check the connections for signs of heat/poor connections anyway)

It might be something simple like a preamp tube but it's probably a good time to find a really good amp tech that knows Ampegs. (hopefully this particular model)

There's some info from my amp tech about issues mine needed repaired further back in this thread if you missed them.

I'd imagine your location would have some good Ampeg techs available, here's some threads with some NJ area info:

Here's an older SVT-II thread I recently ran across. It's about a different SVT-II malfunction but there seemed to be some possibly related info:

Good luck NickyBass, be sure to let us know what it needed after you get it all sorted out.

Thanks for the reply. That is kind of you. The fan is working great, and the head is not mounted in a rack at the moment. It does get hotter than my V4, but I just attributed this to the higher power.

The cable is a nice quality speaker cable that works with my other gear.

I may just have to take it to a tech. Denis Kager is about an hour away, but I may just try to go local (er).

Been using mine with a single 8-ohm Goliath III (grey grill) for over four years, with no ill effects. I wrote to Ampeg and they said it was OK, too. My amp-tech friend Vinny says as long as the impedance doesn't go above 8 ohms there is no problem and in fact there is less wear-and-tear on the tubes.
I also had intermittent drop-outs but was able to cure it by using a jack cleaner (a regular 1/4" plug will work almost as well) on the power-amp-in connector. This jack has a contact that must close and open whenever a plug is inserted into it. If it gets corroded or builds up any other kind of dirt or rust where these two contacts come together, it's like un-plugging the pre-amp from the power amp. Another way around the problem is to just use a short instrument cable as a jumper from the pre-amp-out to the power-amp-in jacks.

Here's mine (with a 4-ohm load). :bassist:

"What, me worry?"

You've been a member of this forum allot longer than me so I assume you've already read the numerous strong warnings by Psycho Bass Guy and the former Ampeg design engineer "Jerrold Tiers" repeatedly explaining in detail why you shouldn't run tube-powered SVT's at 8 ohms. I was just curious how loudly you typically play your amp and add that I think your T/B signature seems very appropriate... :smug:

Just thought I'd let you guys know.

are both mine now :)

Have my finals coming up, but will work on the site after that. Any ideas or what not, just say. Anyone wanting a bash at the design of it, just say !

Will make sure to have a members gallery section :)

I went for the .co.uk as i knew it would be cheaper, then checked the .com and found out that wasnt much more than a .co.uk, so, there we go :)

HEY GUYS!!!
finally got my 2 sorted. i cannot believe the sound!
room filling wallop!!!!

i ws playing it the other nite for the first time and three bands in total used it so i got to hear it from both sides. i did notice that it ran pretty hot but did not notice the fan turning, ( i checked frequently!) Is the fan temperature controlled or is it always on?
cheers guys, just wondering if i should takeit back to the tech.

I LOVE THIS THIG SO MUCH I THINK IM GONNA BUY ANOTHER!!! LOL

Congrats roon!

My fan starts working as soon as power switch is on, (hot or cold/standby on or off)
I gotta feeling your tech didn't move your fan wires to the corect taps and your 110v. fan motor was actually receiving 230 volts...

(you should place some sort of room-fan directed towards your amps back panel if you want to use your amp again before taking it back to your tech for the fan repair)

Hey rod, didn't you end up having a 230-volt fan motor instaled in yours when converting over?

Yeah, I did, after we(my tech & I) forgot to change the fan ever to 240V(he thought it'd run off the tap we already changed-apologised to me tho It was 1/2 my fault as I was rushing him a bit-anxious to get it happening!!) the fan burnt out as it was a 110v one running at 240V!! So My tech set it up so I could simply get another fan to fit-240v, tho he could've left the fan on the 110v tap( apparently there's a tap for both 110V & 240V) & i COULD've got a 110v one. If that makes sense????????:hiding:
BUT I'm def. not tech minded( soldering in new pups/pots in a bass is about MY limit :( ) so I couldn't describe how to do it. there were about 15-20 steps involved IIRC & I lost it at about 5
The new 240V fan is functioning perfectly as is the SVT2:)

thanks bud. i appreciate your thorough evaluation!!!!

omg the tone tho!!!!

i turned it on and every one in the room turned ansd smiled! (about 30 people!!!) my guitarist is a proper tone nut, loadsa expensive amps and gits for every occasion. he has heard me play thru vintage marshall, gk, eden, ashdown, trace blah blah, his reaction was pricelees , he turned to me smilied and mimed "TURN IT DOWN" to me!!! (first time up against his 1000w mesa!!) i think he realised no longer was he the loudest rooster!

Quick question....Can I use JJ ECC82 and JJ ECC83 tubes as a replacement for the 12UA7 and 12AX7 preamp tubes? I have a few of each already and I wanted to expieriment with different tubes to narrow down my static issues. Thanks for any help. BTW, this is a great thread and a great resource for SVT II's.
