Ampeg SVT-II appreciation thread

i tried a markbass LMII twice this weekend...I am thinking of buying a small, light head to use for travelling and practice

it sounded good with the VLE up high and the gain down low, but when i turned up the gain, it made me think lugging my SVTII around isn't so bad

the ampeg just has such a warm, fat, musical response all the way up to clipping that it's hard for me not to miss it, even though i know it's unfair to compare the 2 straight across:)

thought I'd chime in...i've had my II for a couple years now...

she's had "some" down time, but now it's 100%!

Highly recommend Carlos @ LS Electronics - he's offically an expert on II's! He got the demons out!

proud to be an SVT II owner *and* SLM alumni!

Hi,

I really like the sound the SVT II puts out. Its not just sound, its presence as well. I never really knew what that meant until I started using this amp. One thing I have to ask the pros; If I wanted to get a similar or close sound (with the SVT presence) from a lighter package, would an ampeg pre and a good power amp work?

Or; does the SVT presence come from the power section as well and hence there being no substitute?

I would really like to put together a lighter rig for those smaller gigs.

Thanks

I've heard good things about the Peavey VB-2.

That may be true but its still a heavier amp. I am hoping someone has tried this before and has found a pre (Ampeg or not) that I can use in front of lets say a CA6 or a Stewart 2.1 to get close the the SVTII. I have searched the threads a little and there have been some attempts but no one seems to be very ecstatic about any solution so far.

I was thinking it was in the 40 lb range, but looks like its almost 58 lbs. Seems like the 400 or 400+ is 40-something isn't it?
And the Traynor 200W is about 41 lbs.
The soon-to-be-out Eden E300T is supposed to be 40 lbs.
None really light-weight, but lighter than the SVT-II.

this is a case where bigger is better. the heaviness of the SVTII is reflected in the sound. vacuum tubes plus big-ass transformers equal massive tone. i gig smaller venues with it pumping through smaller cabs and it sounds great. lifting it is a small price for the full sounds it magically makes (don't think i'm the first one to say this...)

+1... Well said squish.

i have a '92 SVTII.

i really hate the output jacks that are made of nylon (or whatever). they always loosen up by themselves and never feel tight. i might have stripped the threads of one when i was just finger-tightening it the other night.

has anyone replaced these jacks with quality metal ones? seems like a very worthy mod.
