Ampeg SVT-II appreciation thread

Congrats...I know there is one in Stockton that seems pretty beat up...this one you purchased looked much nicer...and for quite a bit less than the one in Stockton...enjoy...

Thanks. Looks like the one in Stockton might have sold.

Fellow SVT-II brethren, I'm still looking for an owner's manual, can anyone help? The PDF link posted earlier in this thread a couple of years ago has expired.

Link Removed

I stuck it back up on the webspace, same link as before. That should work, if not, well, complain about it here :p

Hey thanks so much! Very helpful and now saved.

Also, anyone know where I can find a case similar to the original ampeg cases [ with tolex and ampeg written on the side posted earlier in this thread ] currently? The Canadian vendor posted a couple of years ago doesn't seem to carry them anymore.

You're very welcome!

I don't think they were around for too long. Well, the released rack case anyways.

It's an "SVT-RC" you want to look for.

To be honest, much safer in a flight case or something anyway.

Bummer. I really dig the looks of those cases, makes the amp look more like a traditional old school amp than a rack unit, which I find more appealing. I have mine in an 8 space rack but it takes up so much room I had to take out my noise gate.

Also, any advisement as to how much rack space to leave above or below the amp? Mine is sitting right on the ground of the rack case with the rubber feet removed, with some room on the sides of the amp for air to flow from the fan, given the design of the case. I've seen users running the amp with other low heat rack units right on top of them and even with two SVT-IIs right on top of each other. Wouldn't that encourage heat issues? I have a Sunn 1200s rack amp that is going to be fixed and I was thinking of buying a 10 space rack and might have to have it right on top of the SVT-II due to lack of spaces left.

Heck, theres a post on the first page of a massive rack with two of these bad boys.

I just keep the SVT-II in it's own little 4U rack case. The older SVT-IIs had the rubber feet on the back of the case. I also added an in-line kettle plug to the power cable so I don't need to worry about the plug bouncing into the tubes when it's being transported.

If I was using it in a rack with other gear, I'd try and leave a rack space above the SVT-II, just because of the heat, but that may or may not be an issue. I'd also keep it on the bottom, just seems more structurally sound that way!

Yep, I saw that double-SVT-II monster rack. Amazing. Thanks for the advice, again.

whoa, look who came crawling back! you know, your sunn was a killer amp for its day, but i kind of had a feeling this would happen. hope you don't burn out your power tubes as quickly with this one ;)

Yup, haha. Couldn't stay away from that 300w all tube bass heat. And dang, does this thing sound great. How I've missed power tube compression, you really don't fully realize it until you go back and get dunked right into that tank of deep full body presence. All my effects sound so much better, especially fuzz, which is no surprise, but a refreshing homecoming.

The guy I bought my problematic SVT-Classic from wasn't the most scrupulous dude, with mismatched tubes in the thing I didn't notice right off the bat. The previous SVT-II owner seemed the polar opposite, and the tubes look fresh and dandy glowing hot in spiritual awe in the back of this mother.

The Sunn 1200s is a decent amp, I agree. But the tone is just not where the SVT-II is. I'm going to keep the 1200s as an under-the-van-seat backup for the SVT-II when touring.

I know this is the appreciation page...just a quick question...I own an SVT II preamp...if I buy an SVT Pro 2 and use the preamp will it come pretty close to the SVT II I used to have ? That way I could have almost both amps? I know the tube protection circuitry might do something different...but using the chassis with the preamp shouldn't that put it very close to the SVT II?

I am still dumbfounded I didn't know what I had in my SVT II...even had the case that looked like a classic to mount it in...and since reading all these threads am glad that the stupid little SVTIIP preamp(or so I thought) is a lot more than I realized it was...need to get it out of the recording studio and retubed...I just was using it for the hell of it until I got my SVT tubes back...I have seen the SVT-300 somewhere...thanks for the HUGE tip on that...maybe its time to comb the pawn shops...

OK...while I was sitting here posting like a fool into the wee hours...I hadn't checked my email and just got confirmation that I will be the owner of a very clean SVT II...I am so gosh darn (trying to adhere to profanity policy) F$*#!ing excited...so I may be selling that preamp mentioned above...

Now with regards to above post...would I be able to obtain a preamp, like the CL or Pro 2, if they make one, so I can get the gain and then use the power that with my SVT II chassis has without the tube circuitry to have a pretty spectacular amp?

There is a good story which I will post after I get it...persistence definitely paid off for me on this...thanks for all the great tips from all of you...I read all 500+ threads...great stuff...

long way to go for little or no extra reward. svt's with a gain knob are cool, but when you plug into one without a gain knob, i seriously doubt you'll ever miss the gain knob.

Thanks, Jimmy...

I owned one previously...but I never got to play it out in an open venue, just in a small garage studio...don't think I ever got it over two honestly...plus, never had it gone through to put it at its rightful level...

I think you are right...and thanks for calming my hyper rear end down...I haven't been able to sleep or sit still...I love when something takes me back to the level of being a kid again...

Heck, I'll be honest, when I first got my SVT-II I was a bit disappointed. It didn't seem to be "all that".

Then I used it for a gig, wow. That's where it really shone like nothing else!

Also, random point of interest.

Tonight I was off seeing Pennywise (big US punk band), their bassist (Randy Bradbury) was using an old SVT-II (non-pro) :)
