Ampeg SVT-II appreciation thread

I'm actually talking to the guy in Stockton who has the beat up SVT II. It looks pretty thrashed, and he doesn't seem to know much about it other than it works fine at the moment. Here's what he has to say:

"It has a bunch a scratches all over and the metal handles are have paint scratched off them. I dont know how old it is for sure but the guy who sold it to me a year ago said it was made in the early 90's. I also dont know what tubes they are. I've never changed them before. Also, I remember the previous saying that it did have something wrong with it but had professionals fix it. I've never had any issues with it. It's always been loyal in what it does. The tone is nice and full of warmth. The only thing is its a pretty heavy sucker, but thats what you get with an all tube deal."

I'm not too particular about aesthetics as long as it looks good on the inside. What do you guys think is a reasonable offer for an SVTII in this kind of shape?

I just picked up a '93 SVT II last weekend from CL for $700. Was in much better shape than the one described above and the power section still has life in it. Assuming it needs some fresh tubes fairly soon and a case to rack it in I'd probably start at offering $500 to the guy.

I appreciate the help fellas. Here's a few pics of the beast for those of you who haven't seen it:

Yeah...the Stockton gentleman wanted a grand...I offered him five hundred and he never replied...even with his 'lo-ballers bring your offer and we will go from there' approach...lol...but he might have softened since my offer though, so try...I should never have sold my first one...the one I am getting has been serviced regularly when it was gigging and is in much better shape for $800...for any TBer near Arlington, TX there was a decent looking one on their CL at a good price...

Just to beat Mikeldtl...here are pics of my SVT II out of Portland...we each picked up one of these out of an original set of three, from one very professional, class act of a person and musician. I had to bribe it out of the owner's hands with another hundred and that I would cover the cost of shipping, but for $800 I think it was a steal. I can't stress how grateful I am to him for changing his mind and letting me purchase his last one, let alone ship it down to me...

When it arrived I thought maybe since TJ had used professional techs, he may not have fastened the head into the shockmount case correctly...I was able to lift the head right out after removing the front cover. He dropped a line to see if I had received it and I sent him a text back to let him know it looked good but what I mentioned above. He called this afternoon, concerned and asking how it could have slipped out of the rails. He stated he had put 'Fragile' stickers all over the box and I did notice them when walking past the packing this afternoon. While we were on the phone, I realized when talking with my Fedex driver, the driver had suggested rolling it end over end up my stairs...I told him, absolutely not, its a tube amplifier...I think I pretty much can guarantee that is what he was doing as he hauled it around all day, hence the stripped rail and damage to the inner case, it even broke a rivet on a corner strap on the inside casing on the upper left. If you look close in the pick you can see the bottom of the aluminum warped and pushing up and the corner pulling apart on the upper left as the rail tried to break free before the left side screws stripped under the weight. I am hoping I can get Fedex to cover this if there was insurance. Once again, being the class act he is, TJ wanted to make sure I was happy and I did pull it apart, dust it, check for visual signs of damage to the unit and tubes, but did not find any. I did play it today and it seems to be fine. Its very loud. I guess that 'built like a tank' mantra applies here.

Any other suggestions anyone may have as to what else to check since the head basically went through a tumble dryer are greatly appreciated. Todd said it was a good thing I decided to purchase the case, I agreed stating it became a $150 insurance policy. I am just a little bummed, though, that the case is banged up internally, since the case was purchased and traded to Todd less than two months ago, selling for approx. $300 new. If all else fails, I will spin it around, just the logo will be at the back.

Normally, I would take all the backline tech's setting stickers off and make the amplifier appear as flawless as possible. Todd has owned them brand new out of the box since 1993 and kept them for 17 years, never traveling with them without being in some type of rack. Out of respect, I feel its only right to leave them on. However, I will more than likely go with the suggested settings I have read about on here for my own tone.

All in all though...damn, I love this amplifier...I am so ecstatic to get an even newer, cleaner version of what I owned previously, it has history, vibe, and an original owner that loved it as much as I do.

I have a question on the tube bracket that sits above the power tubes. What is the white/grey material that's attached/glued to the bracket? Is it just standard foam? The unit I have doesn't have the bracket and since you can't use bear trap clamps, I figured on just fabricating one.
BTW...I finished up the circuit board reconstruction and repair work. Many thanks to Anderbass for the PCB pics!
I'm dying to give this baby a workout...playing a solid state head just ain't gittin' it.
To everyone else...great posts in this thread...I spent 2 hours going through all 29 pages... :)

It's just a dense foam to help secure the tubes. I'm sure some stout weather stripping or similar would work just as well. I believe you could add a few of these: http://tubedepot.com/sk-ret3.html if you utilized the two screws on either side of the power tube sockets to secure them. Just install one side/screw at a time to keep everything together. The most you'd have to do is widen the holes in the retainers. I installed some SED KT88s that seem to be a little too tall for the stock retainer 'bar' and have been considering this.

Thanks for the heads up Chesire, but I missed that one. I did however make a deal w/fellow TB'er Easonbass for a well cared for, ultra clean SVTII. Woohoo! Should be here in the next few days. Thanks for all the help everybody...

Hey everybody. Got my SVTII yesterday. Couldn't be happier w/it. Fat round goodness. The fan though, is loud as hell. Is this a common issue w/this model? Any possible fixes you've come up with? And I already know that cranking it up will obliterate the fan noise;)

got one from the classifieds recently and i must admit... i like what i hear so far!

I've ran it through my ampeg 810 and my schroeder 210212 BFM.. sounds great through both.

I havent gotten a chance to crank it yet... I wish there was an easy way to get that overdrive with this thing though..
