Ampeg SVT-II appreciation thread

I wish there was an easy way to get that overdrive with this thing though..
no you don't ;) the preamp overdrive that comes with the 2 pro and cl isn't nearly as good as the power amp overdrive. besides, for live work, switching from clean to od is a very unwieldy was of operating.

that's why i'm a firm believer in pedals for od in a live setting. true, most don't have tubes and the ones that do use little dinky tubes, but man, that vt does an awesome job of recreating power tube breakup, especially when you run it through an svt.

I havent cranked it yet... what im getting from looking back on old posts.. is that it starts breaking up around noon-ish?

I have an xotic bass BB pre... maybe I'll keep it around. I would really love to get that cranked svt tone out of the svt-II though.. any thoughts?

well regardless of knob position, it doesn't start breaking up till you hit the 300w mark, so it's going to be loud loud loud no matter what you do.

and i have no experience with the bb, but whether you turn the knob or use a pre to boost, you've still got to hit the 300w mark to get power amp distortion, so i still stand behind my original post.

used it last night for the first time at a gig and neede to crank it anyway! sounds sooo good. mic'd it up with an Audix d4 and it sounded killer for sure. sound guy even asked what mic it was for future ref.

band before me had an svt cl and i was GASing for a cl head but not anymore. I love the svt-ii just a tad more. the cl head just looks classy on an 810 hahah

Hey congrats to you two new SVTII dudes... :smug:

My amp tech (timv) double checked and confirmed its absolutely fine to dual-input an SVTII. He said the circuitry between the 2 inputs function as a simple mixer. I ended up preferring an ABY pedal with clean ran into the Normal input, and then blending my FX into the Bright.

awesome! thanks much

anyone ever use both normal and bright inputs?

I've not, IIRC the bright input is padded aswell, just something to take into account.

Congrats on the new amp tho :)

I recall it's been said that instructions are printed inside the chassis. Also, there are instructions available in some manuals.

Mine is due to arrive tomorrow! Can't wait!

Yup, the instructions are printed on the inside of the chassis.

The instruction manual for the SVT-II also covers the SVT-300, which was just the power section of the SVT-II with an added presence control :)

Almost bought an SVT-IIP + SVT-300 setup before I got my SVT-II. In a way I wish I had gotten that, just so it looked even bigger :bassist:

I've had a SVT-IIP on my GAS list for a pretty good while now -- they don't come up for sale very often nowadays.

Picked mine up from Point Roberts just a few days ago, I'm in bass heaven! This is the polar opposite of SWR amps, I like both, but this definitely suits my style better.

Just to expand on my experiences a bit, the mids were nice, warm and very present. I now understand why the bass salesman was saying the SVTs are the only full-tube bass amps with a certain brighness to it and I agree with him. It's a shame though, the amp sounds so good already with everything at noon, don't really feel the need to do much tweaking. The ultra-hi and ultra-lo does a great job at scooping out the sound for slapping and popping.

What do you guys use for cases? I'm leaning towards an SVT-RC.

Also, for biasing, the instructions said connect to a 4 ohm resistor, can I just use the speakers as the load while biasing?

Yeah that'd probably suck, mines got 2 beefy handles with spring loaded rubber grips that swing out a few inches. I had this amp in a SKB case for awhile but my Pearson's grips are much more comfortable to carry plus their better located to balance this (front-heavy) amp model.

My SVT 2 non pro just started making a sound today, while getting ready to record it..
When i take it out of standby besides the Normal Thunk noise that we all hear and is just part off it.

The speaker cab now makes a thump noise which it never did before..... and there appears to be a low freq HUM that is constant at about 60 hz .. So if i play a B on the "A" string it gets a beating sound.. ughhhh
I was unable to use it to record today the Hum just a little too loud... at a moderate volume..
Anyone know what that may be?
Thank you
