Ampeg SVT-II appreciation thread

OK thanks clear enough I will try to find a different solution using my ST-IIPreamp.
Sorry, I missed the P in your post where it's a stand alone pre. I would just get a small combo amp rather than a power amp and cab unless you want more than just a home practice set up. If you just want to hear it to practice, you can plug it into a stereo system. You can't just plug it into a speaker, you'll need an amp.

Hi, I own a SVT-IIP (only same preamp part as SVT-II) with a Spector since a couple of years, and love it for recording.
Right now I use a computer plugin for simulating a cab, which is far from perfect...

Maybe I'm going to make you laugh, but is the SVT-II "home friendly" for practice and recording with the appropriate cab?

A IIp + (any power amp) will not equal a SVT II. The magic is in the power tubes fed from a nice pre, not just the preamp. I also have an SVT III which has the same pre but doesn't sound 3D like the II, even using the same cab, bass, etc.

Mine is just fine for home use. I just turn the volume down.

So I just upgraded my cab stack to a pair of Emperor vented 2x12's and as a result of the new height I'm considering NOT trying to heft my SVT-II on to the top of the stack, instead having it standing up on one end next to the cabs.. I'm a little concerned about heat dissipation, though... understanding that the amp is designed to vent from sides to back. I've got it in an Anvil / Calzone flight case with about 3 inches of empty case in the back. I was thinking about adding a couple of extra cooling fans to the grill plate.

Anyone have any experience with this?

I believe the svt 2 doesn't have any opening on the sides or top or bottom for venting.
The fan I believe sucks air in from the top side of chassis and blows it through the inside of the amp and it blows through spaces around the tubes.
If I am correct, you should be fine with it sitting anyway you want.
Probably best to leave it upright though so the tube heat rises away from tubes.
Extra fans don't hurt either.

If I'm using it home, I sit it on its side and it does just fine. If I play it out, I'll put it on top of the cab and hook up a simple desktop fan.

I have left it on its side on purpose at a gig before to avoid people from putting their drinks on top of it.
