Ampeg V4 - 4x12 Cabinet - Speaker Suggestions

A couple of questions for John 10 ... how much tolex does this cabinet require?

it took just over 3 yards for my v4 cabs. to tolex it like the original, since you need one continuous piece that goes around all of the sides with one seam on the bottom.

.... and on the rubber feet on your cabinet, did you use a bolt & T-nut, or did you use a wood screw

i used large rubber feet with large sheet metal screws with a washer to attach them (same as the modern ampeg method on SVT cabs).

... oh one more item ... are the amp cups glued in, in addition to being stapled in?

no, they are not glued in.

i found that the aluminum dust caps actually did add just a little more top end to the 2512's, but not really all that much.
Perhaps, but their reach exceeds their grasp already, in that the axial response goes at least 500hz higher than the useful off-axis response, and that's when used singly or in a vertical array, let along horizontally mounted.

Wow, TalkBass is great. I too am on the prowl for a V4 cab, to go w/ my V4 head (which is soon to be set up w/ =C= 6550's, and Ch.1 caps replaced to be [like] a V4B channel --I'm leaving input 2 as-is because I love it).

I saw John_K's cab w/ 2512's & LUSTED to have that package, JBL covers & all, but after reading this thread again I'm now thinking to start with two S2012's & seal off the other two holes, w/ option to add two more later.

I LOVE the thought of replicating (okok, -"simulating") my V4>810e rig sound in a smaller package, and since I'll only be running a 100w head I think two s2012's are a good start as opposed to a 1000w cab w/ 4 2512's (& $'s a consideration too).

Regardless of whatever speaker plan I go with, how do I go about insulating / padding it (like John_K advised DubStylee to do)? And do I leave the padding the same if I add the other two speakers later? Is this standard procedure to insulate a 4x12 sealed cab if intended for bass? Tks, J

Man, go with two 2512's and you will be so happy...they sound gorgeous, and I wouldn't want any less bass response. (I didn't do the dust cap mod, and there seems to be plenty of higher content for my tastes.) I found the drivers for $110/ea somewhere, it might have been a sale but low prices can be had.

I went ahead and put two of the original CTS drivers back in my cab, wired to a separate jack, so I could use one half as a guitar rig or one half as a bass rig. The result was that I found that two 2512's and two CTS 12's sound incredibly good and balanced together (using the 2ohm tap on the V4), and now that's where the cabinet is staying. I can send you the nice black piece of 3/4" plywood I used to cover the empty speaker sockets if you want to pay postage; my dad (he has better power tools than I do) and I cut it to fit perfectly and it's very easy to mount.

Now I'm back to considering the 2512's again, & since it's only two of them...
You know I have to admit, it's not even the high end from the shiny dustcaps, -it's the look! (there -I said it!)

You know, that would be great and I accept your nice offer. I'd be happy to PayPal you the postage. How do we go about that? Do I "PM" you or something? Thanks a lot, Jimmy

I put S2012s in my V4 cab. It sounds amazing. I also retolexed and put new grill cloth on with lots of help from JohnK.

OMG that looks absolutely GORGEOUS, Big Stubby!

Thankfully I have some time before I have to make a decision between the Basslite 2012's and the Deltalite 2512's; I'm still on the prowl for a good deal on the V4 cab itself...

My current thinking is I want to get my feet wet first by putting [either of those aforementioned] two spkrs in a V4 & sealing the other two holes (any suggestions on whether to put padding inside??). Then, eventually I'd love to have a second JohnK-style 1000w 4x2512 cab that I could run ANY head through. But first things first, I want to arrange a nice marriage for my beloved V4 head.

On the padding / inside-insulation subject, if I don't catch wind of the best thing to do, I might break down and contact JohnK for some advice too.

That's what I needed to see --thanks a lot John!
I hope a good deal on a V4 cab turns up soon... I took a tip from someone here @ TB & have started contacting sellers far away, and proposing shipping it to me empty, & keeping their speakers for themselves in exchange for the shipping. I'm even looking at cabs w/ no grill (new grill @ Fliptops is $65 but no logo). It's good to have a mission! Tks to Jeremy too.

I'm curious. I just picked this up at a flea market for 50 bucks and noticing all your pictures do not have the serial sticker on them. Is this one older/newer or any different than the ones you are showing?

I'll be bringing it home tomorrow and plug it in to see how it sounds. I used a battery on it at the flea market and all 4 drivers are working still but that don't mean one or more have had the v.coils smoked at one point :hmm:

The outside looks like it has been thru a war, but all speakers are clean and in good shape. I guess I really can't use it as-is for bass using an amp that's putting out way over 100 watts and I will pull a speaker out to see what they are, but according to you all they are Celestion low wattage drivers :(

For $50 you can't go wrong for '70s Ampeg wood, and you could potentially sell those four speakers to a guitarist for more than $50 & start your new speaker fund.

You say cosmetically it's like a bomb blew it up; sounds like a fun project to me. I just bought new grill cloth from Fliptops, $10/ft. You could start by padding the inside with foam egg-crate-looking mattress topper & might even sound good with the original speakers in the meantime as long as you don't push 'em.

I turned a VOX 4x12 cab in to a GREAT lightweight 2x12 bass cab with padding & speaker swap by covering the other two holes; you could start there with yours.

I also took a V2 4x12 cab & sold the old Eminence square-mags for $90 on Craig's & put in two 12" Eminence Deltalite II in the bottom & two Eminence Basslite 2012's in the top, put on new grillcloth & padded the inside and now it's my favorite cab of all time, & I've had a lot.

Sorry I can't be more helpful with your serial # model # sticker; hopefully some of the other guys will chime in.

hey guys i have a question.
what speakers would be good for using it with my svt at 4 ohms???
would i have to change the wiring and get the jack plate on the back modded for a 1/4 cable???
i have a mid 80's ampeg svt and i wanted to get an ampeg v4 4x12 cab for those times when i cant bring my 8x10 to a gig.
