Every mornin' that I wake up I'll immediately check out this thread, then I check it out in the middays and then I check it out right before I go to sleep.

I'm on subscribe, so I get it on my "My Talkbass" page, every time someone posts.

I myself could already install the pickups, but something is holding me back, maybe disappointment of the sound? Someone said 250K CTS pots will cause more (I don't know the English word for it) ''noise/buzzing'' like: RRRRGGGRRGRRRRR....
But if everything is shielded the bass should be fine I guess?

Thats not true, pot value has no effect what so ever on hum.

In fact, if it did, 250k's would have the opposite effect as they are darker pots.

Measure the screw, subtract the thickness of the neck pocket on the body, the remainder is whats going into the neck, thus thats how far you should drill into the neck.

Mark your depth on the drill with paint or masking tape to give yourself a visual reference. If you want to get fancy, cut a small tube to length to limit your depth.

Clamp the neck securely and make sure you drill straight. Don't bellmouth the hole.

Put a screw into the neck pocket and compare your marked drill for length. Make triple sure you are drilling shallower than the neck thickness.

I would, but the minor difference will be no problem, if you don't.

So we got 2 ft of snow in 10 hrs and even though i could drive the rest of my work decided to pull a "blue flu" so im off for 2 days and with a state of emergency warning im stuck inside...what better time to get down to brass tacks.


so thanks to tber Dark Horse i went on his suggestion of stain to ditch that yello of re ranch vintage tint.

I'm sure you got the info you need already, but a drill press is a very useful tool for this, they are pretty cheap if you dont have one. I was worried doing it also .

my father in law has one..hes a wood worker. ill just have to wait til next weekend to put the neck on. on the plus side that gives me the time to do everything i want to do. i had the new issue pop up of having to make a rout for truss rod adjustment screw access (thanks to willicious for the inspiration on that one)

It definitely made it a bit easy for me using the press, ensuring I couldnt press down too hard.

What make neck is that? (I'm sure you have said somewhere but I must have missed it). I ask because it looks a lot like the one I bought, although I'm sure they all look pretty similar.

easy as pie and im happy with the results

now im spraying and i got one hell of a run...being tinted im nervous about getting rid of the run and that dark streak..currently seeking advice from trusted people but if you have any suggestions feel free and chime in.

The mods are
Wizard Pickups P/J set, (worth checking out, really cool sounding and nice to be a bit different).
Gotoh 201 bridge
Different value capacitor
Black Pickguard (used to be white)
New neck (used to be rosewood)
Fender Vinyl
Fender flats
Dunlop straplocks
Every screw changed! (trusty indonesian labor managed to chew them all up)

That comes to around £235, plus the £180 or so original purchase of the bass 10 years ago...I know everythings more expensive here! Two things I kept stock were the pots, and the tuners, both because they did an ok job. I didnt fancy changing the value of the pots, and read there is little sonic difference in better make ones, so left em.
