When you hear the band name (Brian Jonestown Massacre), I....kinda expect something like this. Am I the only one?

You're right about the Vox guitars this band uses, sometimes 3 12 strings and it sounds good, plenty of other guitars too and the bass is way up in the mix which is good. I think they are recreating Hippie San Francisco music 20 years later and added some shoe-gaze drone from their era. Some of them are also recreating the hippies main character disorders too, left over from distant abusive fathers (that was normal in the 50s). Just in August here

Never heard of the band this thread was started about. But "popular" might be a stretch as a description. Popularity isn't 0 or AC/DC. There are levels in between but these guys must be just off the floor on the popularity scale. The band name gives it away.

Anyone interested in indie rock has been aware of the Brian Jonestown Massacre for 25 years or more. I’m always amazed when people use their ignorance of a band as some sort of measure of relevance. Just because you don’t know what’s up means they don’t matter?
Came here to say what everyone already said - The Brian Jonestown Massacre has been fighting on-stage for as long as they've been around. Anton Newcombe is a textbook narcissist. I highly recommend the movie "DIG!" for anyone who cares about 90s/early 2000s indie rock. Basically a documentary about TBJM and The Dandy Warhols (the latter of whom are great, IMHO.)
Edit: TBJM had some stuff I like too but overall I find their music a little out there and the band's whole vibe is off-putting. But I was in a band for a long time with guys who basically considered them heroes. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

BTW, fight during BJM sets were much cooler when Joel the maracas player with the awesome sideburns would stand they’re, stone faced, while bedlam commenced all around him.
