It's kind of a perfect storm: Rick Beato is an old muso who's got a huge youtube following, and AdP are (comparatively) brand-new band with a suddenly huge youtube following.

I've been struck by the number of old guys (like me) who really dug that KEXP video. I'm a little surprised Beato gave his thumbs up but that's going to legitimize AdP to the kind of older musician and music lover who might usually only watch his videos about how terrible the music is that kids listen to these days.

Agree. I'm just a little dissapointed that he obviously made the whole video only in order to clear his mailbox.

He could have done a much deeper analysis of their style: highlight unusual time signature, or he could have played a riff with a normal guitar to show how different it would sound... There are so many things he could have said.

Maybe because it's mainly (some of) us old guys who have been listening to stuff like Zappa, Mahavishnu Orchestra, King Crimson all our lives. I don't know who younger folks have been listening to in recent years that would prepare them for this.

This was the first time I've watched one of his videos, so I don't what his sense of humor is like, but I thought the please-stop-emailing-me thing was meant in jest. He clearly dug the music when playing clips and seemed impressed by it.

That said, I too would like to see him do an in-depth analysis, and I suspect he probably is already getting spammed with such requests.

I'm in no hurry to find out if this is ultimately profound to me or just a curiosity.

To my mind, the word "profound" sets an extremely high bar. Maybe time will tell whether this outfit clears that bar, but here's a (tentative) argument for using that word now:

This band is "weird" in multiple ways, but in ways that have all been done before: e.g. "math-rock" composition; odd time signatures; microtonal melody and harmony; multi-level looping; funny costumes. (Did I miss anything?) But these guys are doing all of those things at the same time and -- and I think this is maybe the "profound" part -- doing it in a way that you can dance to it.

Not as, dare I say it, pop as AdP, but they're one of my faves.

Horse Lords don't have a lot in common with AdP other than not observing conventional 12TET systems. Horse Lords is more like motorik extrapolated to encompass minimalism and electronica. Or something like that. They're really good though.

AdP appears to use quarter tone (24TET) scales, Horse Lords uses Just Intonation, so they don't sound much alike.

A couple of my favorites. The first one was recorded in 2020 during Covid lockdown, when the Tusk Festival (just like every other music fest and everything else) was fully remote.

Agreed. There are plenty of "reaction videos" in which posers watch something they (allegedly) haven't seen before and respond in real time, and these can be fun in some ways, but this guy knows music and did his homework first. I especially liked his discussion of time signatures and the "math-rock" aspect of this, including the ways in which the band "pivots" from one time signature to another.

The only part I'm not sure about: I get the "Dada" idea, but if (as he says) the purpose is to help me ignore the visuals it definitely isn't working.

I did indeed like this, though I have to agree with @ardgedee that they're not really in the same category as AdP. I plan to check out the two vids @ardgedee posted tonight.

Lol, didn't say they were the same, but if you like one you might be inclined to enjoy the other. The out-of-the ordinary tunings, while not the same, do provide a similar timbre, to my ears at least.

But seriously, I kid Rick Beato. But I didn't know he did a vid yesterday. I read a GP article on them and went looking for them and found that KEXP concert, and fell in love. It reminded me of the first time I heard Devo on Dr. Demento. If I wasn't Medicare adjacent, I'd consider it as life changing as Devo.
