As someone with Clown Aversion (I'm sure there is an actual term) the beginning just creeps me out.

I don't know what that bass sounds like. I do know what Flea sounds like, pretty sure he's better than that.

It's a nice looking bass? Played in a scary way by a scary clown.

For the past 25+ years, Flea has ridden his celebrity on "I'm a wacky guy with fill-in-the-blank-colored hair who likes to scream, say crazy stuff and play in a band with a long, semi-catchy name that used to do funky stuff onstage and occasionally (but more in the past than the present), we play decent music even though our frontman speaks more than he sings."

Even though RHCP hasn't done anything worthwhile in many moons, Flea has carved out a niche for himself and everyone lets him slide... as if to always say, "Oh, that Flea... he's a HOOT!!!"

Flea is probably the #1 reason we all have had to endure teenage toolboxes slapping really poorly in music stores for the last three decades. And this is the main reason why Fender is doing what they're doing -- to sell instruments to those types of people.

Welp... I call B.S. on Flea... and that horrible "demo video" is another reason why that clown isn't on any of my inspiration lists and never will be.

And here's another...



So... MERRY CHRISTMAS, EVERYONE!!! Except you, Flea who should get coal in your "sock" the rest of your days. :smug:

I think Flea is a pretty simple (borderline functionally disabled) person, but I think he deserves a lot of credit for inspiring people to learn bass -- especially back in the day. He has also sold more Musicman Stingrays than every other Musicman endorsing bass artist put together.

Never saw the anthem video.... Wow.... In a what the heck kind of way.
I remember watching a bass player live video where he was on stage with Stanley, marcus, stu hamm, bunny brunnel, billy Sheehan and a few others. They where playing school days.. Some of the other players where doing more impressive things technically, but if you listened, rather than watched, flea did an amazing, yet conservative job of playing the song... I might even argue he was the best that night... Don't know what's going on with these videos.. Like he's not even trying, or inspired to groove. All these videos show the same man, but it sure aint the same player.

This might not sound as crazy as any of the above, but consider this.
What if the FHA paid Flea to play like that?

I really liked it.

A good homage to the original track, and totally counter to traditional bass advert/demos.

Really suits Flea's persona and has people talking about it. Excellent marketing by Fender & Flea!

For what it's worth, I've only really gotten into Flea's playing and gained respect for RHCP in the past year or so, so I'm far from a fan-boy.

Will check the bass out in person though. Looks great, especially without the useless & ugly pick guard like too many basses have.

Wasn’t a great promo but he has always been self aware of his playing. Ive heard him on numerous interviews downplaying himself and talking about finally getting a chance to study bass later in life. His energy alone got me pumped when I was a kid to play bass. He always had an identifiable tone to me even when he stepped out on stuff like “You oughta know” with Alainis Morissette. I had the early Modulus Flea with the Lane Poor pickups and it was awesome. Played hundreds of shows with it over the years and never let me down. Clearly the Fender is at a different price point but I can’t wait to try one. Say what you want about the guy ( and others like Adam Clayton) or his playing but he has stayed somewhat relevant for a long time in ever changing industry.
