Another Shooting

My point was how I find it interesting that this case has received so much media attention and others as heinous don't even get mentioned.

Can you explain why that might be?
In general, I find that "Why isn't this other thing getting attention?" posters overstate the similarities of the case(s) they have in mind and understate the amount of media attention those case(s) are getting. For example, I assume you didn't hear about these other heinous cases by carrier pigeon, so you probably read about them when they actually were mentioned somewhere.;)

More to the point: Start a separate thread about them so they can be evaluated on their own merits, rather than always trying to derail.

I have faith in humanity in one simple truth. Most of the ignorance and bigotry will die with the older generations.

Slowly but surely.. except in families where bigotry and racism is taught from day one.. Then we need to hope the children have an attitude-changing experience or relationship that will help to break the cycle..

"The arc of the moral universe is long but it bends towards justice. It bends towards justice, but here is the thing: it does not bend on its own. It bends because each of us in our own ways put our hand on that arc and we bend it in the direction of justice...." Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Isn't the kind of stereotyping that went on in this case worthy of attention, since it seems to have led in a very short span of time to someone's death?
from what I read, there were a rash of recent break-ins in the neighborhood.
Being suspicious of a stranger is stereotyping? I consider it being prudent. especially for a "neighborhood watch" guy on patrol.

It was dark, raining and the 17 year old had a hood covering his head.
Did the shooter confirm that he knew the kid was black before he confronted him?
would it even matter?

Maybe you should actually do a little of your own research before spouting off.. Maybe.. Oh and YES IT IS, YES HE DID, IT OBVIOUSLY DID MATTER AS HE KILLED HIM...

PS.. still waiting on your cases that are just as heinous but haven't received media attention..

He killed him just because he was black?
I hadn't heard that.

Posting other cased would be a derail, and that it not my intention.

He did say so on the 911 tape. It matters if, in Zimmerman's mind, the fact that he was black = he must be up to no good. Then Zimmerman is needlessly suspicious due to a stereotype based on something beyond Martin's control (his skin colour), and that ultimately lead to Martin's death.

There's also the stereotyping of youth, wearing a hood (in the rain... why wouldn't you wear a hood if you had it?) - skin colour is not the only thing going on here. If it was a 60-year-old man wearing a golf hat, would he have been suspicious?

Your question to AfroCubanFunkMa was "Did the shooter confirm that he knew that the kid was black before he confronted him".

AfroCubanFunkMa stated emphatically that he (Zimmerman) did confirm that. Onosson also confirmed that it was on the 911 tape. I heard it on the 911 tape. So how does this now become AfroCubanFunkMa stating that he killed him because he's black? You hadn't heard it 'cause neither of those guys said it. You changed the question after they answered it.

Zimmerman may not have set out to kill him, unless he's dumber than I think he is, but it's pretty clear that his "need" to pursue him was based on his being suspicious of a young black kid in the neighborhood. Zimmerman's words make that pretty clear.

He followed him because he (Martin) was black. He killed him because he (Zimmerman) is inept, even as a night watchman.

..........
Race seems to always be brought to the forefront when the victim is black, ever notice that?........

A similar statement could be made wrt Natalie Holloway, Stacey English and Phoenix Coldon (feel free to google the ones you don't immediately recognize)

In either case, it doesn't make the issue more or less pertinent. The circumstances of Trayvon Martin's killing are remarkable regardless of the race of the victim or the perpetrator. But the race of the victim was central to the actions of the perpetrator.

I actually thought the media was a little late on this one, it didn't get traction until the last week or so, two weeks after the shooting.

Saddest thing about it (other than the death):

The kid felt comfortable enough to call his girlfriend in the midst of it but didn't feel comfortable enough to call 911.

Most ironic thing about it:
The kid being (apparently) stalked by a moving car, then having the occupant get out, approach and confront him, would have been more justified in a self defense shooting than Zimmerman.

Whatever Zimmerman is or is not legally, he most assuredly is a complete and total friggan idiot.

IMHO

the ABC report linked about martin's call with his 'gf' claims that she said that he put his hood on because he felt uncomfortable that he was being followed. to me this suggests that he wasn't suspicious because he had his hood on and that it must not have been raining too hard (this is relevant, IMHO, because 'walking slowly in the rain' has been suggested as suspicious activity). it also opens the possibility that zimmerman knew martin was black before he put his hood up.

what i am mostly feeling now, tho, is that the more time that passes and the more media hype this gets the greater people will desire firm conclusions about what really happened (which i don't think will ever be known) thus increasing everyone's frustration. i also think that it reduces the chance of justice ever being served in this case. i fear the case will just get muddier and muddier which is really too bad. maybe the florida law will get re-examined, however, and i think that would be a positive outcome.

also, ftr, in the ABC report i could not help but notice the pictures of martin are all young and innocent looking. the one picture they use of zimmerman makes him already look like a convict to me. i don't know if this is because they are the only pictures they had or not.

ABC New reported that the neighborhood watch program that Zimmerman supposedly volunteered for was not registered. The Martin family lawyer noted that Trayvon Martin's body was tested for drugs while Zimmerman was not given a drug test of any kind.

As I said before, we cannont prove a negative, but to me it really looks like Sanford did not seriously investigate this killing, and the hold your ground law has been used as a smoke screen to justify doing nothing.

I think the convenening of the Seminole County grand jury is too little too late to cover their negligence.

I fail to see why convening a grand jury is too little, too late. It is a typical step in high profile, questionable cases without firm witness testomony or confession and will, given the public outrage against the shooter, probably end in his trial for murder.

If would have thought that the grand jury announcement would have been heralded by those looking for a conviction. Oddly enough, I believe you are the first of the guilty crowd to even acknowledge it.
