I think one of the main issues here - and i haven't seen anyone else say this - is AGE.
Reasoning is fine - but Distraction and Blackmail work better.

Reasoning will not work on really young kids. But it will on older ones. You shouldn't have to smack a child from 5yrs up - they should have learnt NO by then.
And SUGAR will blast through any form of reason - if you have a high child - good luck to ya!
You needn't HURT the child - just get through to them that it's wrong. That simple. All kids are different - some will respond to different things - find what works for your child.

By some of the comments here - i think there's a few too many people posting who obviously don't have kids.

Yes, sugar and various artificial colourings.

I'll never forget the day my sister gave my son a can of Irn Bru (caffeinated Scottish soft drink that's very, very sugary... more so than coke... and luminous orange to boot)

So true! We've truly gone from being a "We" society to a "ME!!!" society remarkably fast. One thing that I've found in dealing with my 5-yr-old daughter (5 1/2, daddy! Get it right! Sheesh! :D) is that kids not only crave attention, but also have a distinct NEED to feel useful. "Helping" with adult chores, without giving TOO much supervision, leads to a good sense of self-worth and healthy independence. One of my little girl's catch-phrases, since the age of two, has been "I got it, daddy. I got it!" And she does indeed got it...about a year ago, she was with me as I picked up a load of twelve 45-lb. bags of topsoil for my backyard. I was in the Jeep, and backed it up in the driveway, then opened the garage door and opened the back hatch. I went through the house to go open the shed, and when I came back a couple minutes later, I found 10 of the bags neatly stacked in two rows of two high, and her dragging number 11 out far enough to get her arms around it. "I got it, daddy...I got it...move, daddy." I let her put that one down, and she was going back for the last one as I grabbed it and pulled it to the back edge. Her little arms quickly wrapped around it, and she heaved it out of the Jeep and told me to close the back hatch as she put the last bag down on the other one. Keeping in mind that this little girl is 4 1/2 yrs old at this point, and each bag was about 3 lbs. heavier than she was! I was really proud of her, and she of herself! Strong kid, and very smart too! She had effectively moved 540 lbs of dirt by herself, without being asked! Not that it was a great distance, only a few feet, but DANG! She was a little sweaty afterwards, but the way she manhandled those bags that weighed at least as much as her....I can tell she'll have no problem defending herself from boys! ;):D

Amen! My little girl loves to help me in the garden, and to help me cook. My teenaged son behaves better for me when I give him work to do...You can't get in much trouble when Mom has had you pickaxe-ing holes in limestone clay so she can plant eight peach trees. After that, you're too tired for trouble! ;)

Hey, you quoted me in your sig line! COOL!!! :hyper:

Cherie :)

If your kid is all worked up and unreasonable, ie. completely unhandlable (sp?) a smack will often shock them into calming down a little, if it isn't done too often at least...

it lets them know they've crossed a line

if the line is set too low the effect is lost.....

Basicly, I'm ok with it as long as it happens at most once or twice a year

I know people that were smacked as a child that turned out fine, some not so fine.

I know people that were NOT smacked as a child that turned out fine, some not so fine.

Overall I think the kids that got smacked, not abused, turned out just fine. They are loving caring individuals for the most part, with the few rotten eggs. I know more cases of the non-smacked children that misbehave, but that's just my experience. I know both methods can work, and I'd like to be able to choose my prefered method when the time comes. Which is actually this November. :D

when i go out i often see kids just crying and whining and screaming and its just so irritating. i really wish that the parents would just bolt their kid across the face...when a child is 4 years old it seems like thats one of the few ways to communicate...a good ol' smack

No, you seem to have that handled already.

I was simply curious. That's all.

How do you figure? My only assertion has been that you don't have to "hit" a child to establish proper discipline. That is much less restrictive statement than saying "In order to properly discipline a child they must be "hit"". Saying you have to "hit" a child would require more "expertise". There are examples of parents who have properly behaving children who do not "hit" them in order to discipline them as well as adults who are well-disciplined, productive adults who were not "hit" by their parents.

Parent's who spank or smack their children seem to take this as some kind of attack, which I do not understand.
