Any DIY pedal builders on TB? Strut your stuff!

As inferred before, I'm concerned about bass loss due to the DyanaRoss part of the circuit.


I will need to spend some time with it. Like I said before, the Exciter does not do much and is so subtle that I wasn't sure if it was doing anything at first. There's a bias pot inside that I was playing with that affects the sustain and exciter but again it is so subtle that I'm not sure what exactly I'm hearing just yet. I will need to play it a lot more.

I'm not sure how to word what I feel like is happening with the bass exactly, though. The color knob can suck the bass out of everything, but when it gets brought back in it's missing some articulation, or character, I guess. It's almost kind of too rounded off and can sound muffled, but the kind of muffled when there is too much bass happening.

It is kind of why I liked it with the Varioboost. I felt like I got this kind of oddly fat and not very well defined subwoofer sound that has pieces that I liked, and the Varioboost gave me a knife to jam through it and give it some guts and grit.

Then again I've only spent about an hour with it, and only with a 10' Acoustic practice amp. I'll need some more time to see how it goes.
 
I figured as much. I need something to put in my kids P bass project (imagine that, another project...) Its a Squier Affinity I bought for $10 to use as a beater. I bought one of those $14 MM pickups a few years ago and it's been sitting. So I'll install that and this preamp to give it a little more kick.

I worked up some pretty cool mods for my version of it, but Ill have to check to see how many of them port readily to the UF board. I can send you one or two LM4250s along with the other stuff you're expecting too.

And it's never too early for mummering, though Covid put a bit of a crimp in it this year. Pretty sure "kitchen full of dancing drunk strangers in disguise" was low on the list of things people wanted this year. :laugh:

My main motivation for going with SMDs is the much better selection of opamps. This is especially true of the moderate current ones (<1mA per section) I'm using in onboard preamp builds. But being able to readily procure 0.1% tolerance resistors and 2% film caps is pretty great for stuff like filter applications too. OTOH, I hand match those components pretty regularly and of course that works just fime.

Got the tiny mini mixer board built and tested, both that and the simple gain board are now on share at OSHpark. I'll work up documentation ASAP, hope someone will find these useful.

I also have about 200 DIP OP275s, OP285s and OPA2134s kicking around. Of course, those are all pretty high current too. :D But yeah, there's an astronomically better selection of SMD opamps than DIPs these days. And for anything onboard or if you want to make very tiny pedals, it's the way to go. Almost everything in my real job except for legacy equipment is SMD and I can solder and rework just about anything except BGA packages. I can get them off no problem, but soldering them on isn't so easy.

I didn't put actual labels on it yet, I have an idea for the waterslide decals that have been discussed here recently. But now I can play around with it for a bit. I wanted subtle reverb, and its about perfect with the knobs most of the way down.

The LED is a blueish-violet that really didn't come through well in the photos. I carried the violet theme through on the inside with violet ground wires from the jacks.

I was looking at the PedalPCB Magnetron for a subtle reverb build. It runs on the same PT2399 IC. Your description has turned my attention to the Spirit Box. Probably a better pick for light verb.

That's a really nice close-up shot. The fine print is crisp and can be ready easily.

Best sounds from this pedal is when voltage is sagged to low CCW knob positions for gated 'n glitched filthy fuzz tones. Rolling off the volume knob on your bass causes oscillations that can be tuned and tweaked for lots of knob twiddling fun.
At full voltage this pedal gives mild distortion. I'm still trying to figure out what the oscillation frequency knob does. It has more effect at full voltage where it sounds like a bias or pinch that influences distortion breakup.
Painted sparse coats of red & purple metallic on black primer.

I'm really pleased with it so far (aside from the masking tape labels, but that's my fault)
The Belton unit was fairly cheap at StompBoxParts, and the PT2399 was super cheap at Tayda.

Thanks for the complements on the photos. I take more photos than what's probably needed, but I like having them to refer back to.

Great looking build. I think that the PedalPCB designs really allow a clean looking guts. I love how tidy all of the PedalPCB builds I've done have been.

Nice builds all around! I had to wait on parts and stuff for a while, business as usual, but now I can dump some builds I finished lately.

Parasit Studio Defrakulator MK3. Not a pedal, it's a little drone synth "with 3 square wave oscillators and one LFO (low frequency oscillator). Each oscillator has independent controls for frequency and volume. With the LFO engaged, oscillator 1 turns into a 3 or 4-step sequencer". Neat. It's quite a lot of fun.
I need to make more drone synths. If any of you fine folks know of simple DIY drone synths, let me know please, as long as there isn't any SMD involved, I can't handle those tiny things.

Atmos Fear Fuzz, Fuzzdog PCB, apparently based on the Hovercraft Ionostrofear. It's an absolutely massive fuzz! I already made one for myself, this one is for a guitar playing friend, she did the graphics. (Sorry about the blurry gut shot, not much to see anyway.)

Truth Bender, it's an Effects Layout take on the Keeley Tonebender (itself based on the MKIII), or "inspired by" as they say. It has an active tone stack and (double) bias to make it splatty. Sounds glorious on guitar. I made this one also for a guitar playing friend - as a surprise. The design is due to things he likes a lot.
I had an annoying and frustrating whine on this one and somehow thought that the MAX1044 had to do with it. After some research I tried to connect pin 1, that was just "hanging" there, to 9V - et voilà the whine was gone. Might be similar to that Volt Thrower problem earlier on? I'm still learning (by doing) ...

Tape Fuzz, PedalPCB, based on the Mid Fi Demo Tape Fuzz. I didn't expect anything special from this one, I just built it because I like Mid Fi. But it sounds really good! Recommended.

Last one, then I'll stop spamming this great thread: Moonn PCB of the Clusterfuzz by Function F(x). Very cool fuzz with a lot of sounds. Here, the clipping options are not on a rotary like the original, it's two 3-way switches, which gives even more options. BAT sounds kinda meh to my ears, but the rest is fine.

Finished my PedalPCB Thumb compressor. Interesting to compare this with my other two versions of the Engineer's Thumb circuit as the PedalPCB BOM is a little different and they have reinterpreted the circuit a tad. It most definitely works, but doesn't easily trigger into more extreme compression like the FuzzDog and DeadEndFX versions to. So maybe that's just my build for whatever reason, but the result is a more subtle compressor that is very transparent. So that's my 125B pedalboard complete!

L-R ThumbSucker compressor, Sentient Machine modulated filter, Hydra delay, Haarp arpeggiator, 6-Band EQ, Ocelot octaver. Maybe I can squeeze one more on there?
