Latest tester for the standalone variable resonance LPF, very close to release on OSHpark now:

I've also done a new layout with all the caps in through-hole format, which just leaves 1206 format resistors and the two SOIC-8 opamps as far as SMT parts. Board size will be very slightly larger, but for pedals this probably won't matter much at all. I made one test pedal with a frequency sweep from 160-8.5KHz and gain/resonance up to ~15dB, which is by far the best sounding iteration I've yet come up with.

Those pots in the pic are the 80 cent Tayda reverse (C) taper dualies, which seem like mostly a tease as far as workability in this design. Having the right taper is really great in terms of control feel, but the section matching is predictably sketchy. Back to the drawing board to see if I can make this work a little better, as although it "works" my tuning options are greatly limited. In any case I've bonked on this project for the moment and am moving back to my long delayed tube amp build for a bit now. Once I knock that out I intend to do a deep dive into pedals for a while, at least a few optimized for various non-bass instruments.
 
About as DIY as I get with pedals is kits, so here is my latest one. Parentheses Fuzz with modified graphics by Micah Ulrich, printed using here's UV printing service. The LEDs are diffused purple. Aluminum top hat knobs from Small Bear Electronics. Black footswitch toppers from Amazon.

A PedalPCB take on the (Dual) Broadcast, I used a GT2307 (with hfe 80), does 9V and 27V. 27V has headroom for days, 9V is also nice, more grit. Both V settings sound fantastic.

Another try at the ORACLE (by Monolith), this time with all the MOJO I could come up with. The cap all the way to the left, I pulled from a funky Italian combo amp from the seventies (amp was more or less done, got it for $2, I just use the cab at home). Not totally spot on compared to the original, but nonetheless a great fuzz.

Bass Brutalist, PCB by Kurt Ballou/God City Instruments, great build doc, that explains what stuff does and what happens if you change some values. I went with "maximum bass" and added a clipping option toggle: stock LED - none - SI. None is pretty similar to LED, but that's fine. Aggressive, cutting distortion. I dig it.

And another Fuzzdog AtmosFear Fuzz (Hovercraft Ionostrofear) for my guitarist, as he also wanted one and I'm not going to part with mine. He chose the graphics ...
It's a big, loud and massive fuzz with an amp like feeling to it.

i just finished building an ODB in a 1590B and etched the enclosure for it. i had an original and really missed having one. i also installed a relayed true bypass and a 9V regulator for the bypass circuit so when i run it at 18V (36V with the LTC1144CN8 charge pump), i won't compromise the relay board.

Very nice. I have this on my project list as well. I really like the tones and sounds that come from Dunwich. How would you compare this to the wizard and VT . I have built the VT and run that at 18v.

the OBD is more of an overdrive where as the Wizard is a fuzz. the volt thrower, being based on a Rat is not as smooth as the OBD.

Dual Tentacles! Two independent Tentacle stripboard circuits stuffed into a 1590B. I can turn either one on for octave up, or both on for two octaves up.
I enjoyed building this oddball pedal that lacks controls and has a confusing mirrored layout. Included a progress photo of the mirrored tentacle stencil made by folding graph paper in half and cutting out a tentacle shape.

Howdy folks,

Been a while, thought there'd be a LOT more content to catch up on! Kinda glad there isn't, to be honest it's a relief.

I'm currently juggling three pedal builds as I wait for parts between them and the 5E3 amp is ongoing, but nearing the end now.


I've been making my own stripboard layouts using verified schematics from DIY pedal websites. Starting with graph paper, pencil, and a big eraser. Creating layouts is a challenge with tetris, chess, and cross-word puzzle elements.

That's how I think of it, too, though I use DIYLC. More fun than Tetris, chess and cross-word puzzles combined!

Great job your kid did on the planets and the Two-Tentacles is an interesting creature I may have to explore as well.

Have you ever ripped apart pots to measure the wafers resistance and match them? :woot:

I've got another one, kinda silly, but very cool. A Fuzz Face with a lot of options, I mean: a lot.

There's your Gain and Volume.
Then each transistor is on a 4-way rotary (GE, SI, Mosfet, JFet) with its Bias pot. All 8 transistors are in sockets.

And switches:
2x BASS: gives you 3 different caps on the input and the output.
CLIP: 2-way, switches feedback resistor for clipping diodes (à la Bazz Face)
MEAT: 3-way, adding caps. middle is classic Fuzz Face, up Colorsound One knob Fuzz, down DAM Meathead.
