1590B with top jacks rules!

I've got another one, kinda silly, but very cool. A Fuzz Face with a lot of options, I mean: a lot.

There's your Gain and Volume.
Then each transistor is on a 4-way rotary (GE, SI, Mosfet, JFet) with its Bias pot. All 8 transistors are in sockets.

And switches:
2x BASS: gives you 3 different caps on the input and the output.
CLIP: 2-way, switches feedback resistor for clipping diodes (à la Bazz Face)
MEAT: 3-way, adding caps. middle is classic Fuzz Face, up Colorsound One knob Fuzz, down DAM Meathead.

The more DIY-friendly open source variable resonance low pass filter is very close to release now, the first test board is working just as modeled and I only see one very simple layout tweak I want to take care of before I put it up for share on OSHpark.

Parasit Studio The Corrupter v.3 ring mod fuzz
Like many ring mods, this thing is difficult to dial in and there are many ugly inbetween spots on the freq control. I'm tempted to drill another hole to mount the Gate trimmer externally. There is a sweet spot on the gate trimmer where the smallest turn makes a big difference in the sound of the fuzz and ringer. I do not recommend this effect and will be keeping a eye out for more DIY ring mod builds.

Nothing smaller than 1206 and SOIC-8 parts, and all caps are through hole format. I could use some schooling on appropriate tiny enclosures, but any feedback would be welcome, as usual.

Finally got around to boxing this one up. This is the Dunwich ODB-3 DIY that’s been on my bench for a few weeks. Please ignore the one bigger toggle switch. I need to place an order. Love the sound that come out of this one. The filter section is quite unique.

The PCB's 51mm is about the limit for 1590A length:
TOP Length of the 1590A internally is 87.8mm (3.4"), but you need enough room for 3PDT or whatever bypass system you choose.

PCB's width at 25.6 is well narrow enough for 1590A.
TOP Width internally is 33.7mm (1.3").


I'm a masochist, I hate side jacks but love 1590A builds and somehow manage to curse my way through to a completed pedal.

If I was smart, I'd just build into 1590B2 (or 1590TRPB) with top jacks and have effectively the same footprint as a 1590A but with more room for the build and related mods/controls etc and a let less cursing. Going up the Hammond ladder, after a 1590B/B2 would be 1590B3 (a 1590B that's a bit wider) and then 1590N1. PLENTY of room for jacks, knobs and switches inside these latter suggestions.

For such a small board, alternatives could be 1590Y (like two 1590As side by side, making it square); other less conventional options such as sloping tops from various manufacturers such as Heeger and extruded Rosa Bopla including folded sheet-metal options, medical control-boxes (hand-held) etc...

Thanks, plenty to sort through there. I can change the board shape no problem if I have a compelling reason to do so, but I already sharnk it a little more to 50.8 x 25.4 mm (2 x 1 inches even). I could also mount the board to the enclosure side, it won't be over 9mm thick or so and many of my onboard preamps already end up going sideways into Fender jazz routes and the like.

I see this as an always on pedal for the most part, but since I already have HPFs built into all three of my current amps it's not all about me. My new tube amp build may or may not end up getting one, but using pedals with it is definitely in the plans in any case. And of course since I have all these prototype LPF boards kicking around now, an HPF/LPF combo pedal is bound to happen sooner than later.

I love all of that! I was actually leaning towards something like the 1590H, which would probably take just a little board layout tweaking, but 1590A looks like no problem at all for my purposes for the first tester. Or I may just do a 1590BB build with the HPF, LPF, and maybe the parametric EQ module that will likely come next.

There are many. Check out GGG, Aion effects, Dead end effects, BYOC, just to name a few. I'm sure others will add to the list.

There is no "BEST". There is only what you like and what you think is best for YOU — totally subjective.

Which Musikding kit did you look at? Musikding itself or one of the many other PCB suppliers Musikding hosts kits for — such as Aion, PedalPCB, Lectric-FX, JMK, Delyk or GuitarPCB? (I can recommend any of those suppliers as I've had PCBs from each of them.)

Other kits/PCB suppliers to check out (in whatever order):

BitsBox UK (counterpart to MKLEK in the US I think, maybe),
uk-electronics.de,
PCBGuitarmania CZ,
Carcharias (maybe) ES?,

What are your goals? A straight ahead Russian Muff can be built on pretty much any standard Muff PCB. If you want compact go for TH Customs' 1590A-sized Muff clone (Or BYOC from Moody Sounds if there's any left). If you want lots of customising with diode-switching and tone bypass and modded tone stack etc then go with GuitarPCB, or Aion, if you want it straight up in 1590N1 go with PedalPCB...

I don't know if Musikding has a Muff kit from all the suppliers mentioned above, because I order PCBs direct from those suppliers and source the parts myself.


Caveat emptor — I've got a boat-load of Muff PCBs but none are built yet! So maybe I'm not the best person to get advice from...
