Any DIY pedal builders on TB? Strut your stuff!

I built a few pedals from PCB (Madbean, GuitarPCB, TH Custom) a few years ago and want to get back into building effects.

I have a very specific project in mind, which is to mount delay, reverb, and drive/fuzz circuits inside a project guitar I'll be assembling for the Luthier's Corner Winter 2023 Build-Off.

Not content to punish myself with just needing to figure out how to put them into a guitar, I want to forego switches and use 1/8" minijacks and cables to route the signal on the guitar, akin to the signal routing of a modular synthesizer. Pardon my crappy ASCII "diagram" of what I mean (O's are female jacks).

It's not really meant to be practical, but rather just something fun and different and noisy and weird.

just finished a Way Huge Purple Platypus Clone in an etched 1590B, with a relayed bypass and all top jacks. It's basically a Red LLama with an added octave up circuit.

After getting caught in customs my pedal pcb order arrived today too! I ordered it ages back so with the 15% offer rather than the 25% one - but oh well!

SMD fets though… tiny! :O quite how I will check their ldss I don’t know!

The BOM says used a matched quad. Do you need to measure them for any other reason? (Honest question, I want to make sure I'm not missing something)
 
Added two more Parasit Studio pedals to my collection. Multiwave guitar synth and Theremin Fuzz.

Here's the whole collection.
Darkadiator on stripboard. Best sub octave of the group.
Arcadiator. Most feature-packed. Highly recommended.
Sidescroller. Simpler version of the Arcadiator in a smaller size.
Into the Unknown. Crazy PLL type noise maker.
8-Bitar. Solo lofi sub octave similar to the Arcadiator and Sidescroller.
Lower row
Theremin Fuzz. Makes flying saucer and spooky Halloween sounds. Simpler version of Into the Unknown.
Multiwave guitar synth. Fuzz and sub octave synth that works best above the 12th fret on bass.
Sonic Reducer. Simple and sweet bitcrusher.
Corruptor ring mod. Difficult to dial in like many ring mods. Least favorite of the group.

Great collection. I love Parasit… I have the Into the Unknown, Theremin Fuzz, Multiwave Mega, Quantum Defrakulator and New Wave CV Generator. Really unique pedals
 
Any reason why the majority (I would say 90%) use through-hole components instead of SMD? [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

I have made the exact pedal (HPF) using through-hole and smd, and I found that smd are easier to remove in case of fail and you have more space in the pcb to include more stuff if you need. Although it is more expensive to get lower tolerances with smd.

Just quickly off the top of my head real quick.
Through-hole are easier to solder for the beginner and less experienced.
You can also breadboard with through-hole.
Also there are an abundance of diy layouts specific to through-hole , whether it be stripboard or etching your own pcbs.
Now that would be something interesting to try, I’m sure someone has done it , but etching your own smd board, Hmmm. Thanks for the inspiration and making me think, I may give that a try.
I have dabbled in smd and can see where your coming from. I like it a lot myself. Do I prefer it over through-hole?, I’m not sure. Both have there pluses and minuses. I do plan to get into smd a little more.

It requires specialized tools and skills. For example I wouldn't know how to measure SMD resistors. Also SMDs are tiny. I prefer big fat components. If I need tweezer, it's not for me.

I've been doing mostly hybrid formats for a few years now. SMD film caps tend to have pretty low voltage ratings, can be problematic with hand soldering IME, and my preferred ones went missing for a couple of years anyway. They also do not tolerate rework very well, while typical box caps can usually be reused. OTOH, I hardly ever use TH opamps any more as pretty much all my favorites are SMD only.

For me the learning curve to SMT was mainly about component handling off the board. Soldering down to 0805 size came pretty easily, but even just getting them out of the packaging was quite a challenge at first. I've settled on 1206 0.1% resistors and started to build a stash in the usual values, but it'll be a while before that matches the thousands of surplus TH parts I've accumulated over the years at 80% or better off retail cost, which are usually 1% tolerance.
