With time he could afford it. Im sure there are plenty of luxuries he spent money on that he could have diverted towards his bass rig.

Cable, water, electricity, CDs, stereo, etc...

I dont spend money on anything other than the essentials and bass gear and thats how I afford it.

What! So, until he can afford to pay top dollar, he's not suppose to play? I don't anyone would do that! I think that position is a bit unreasonable. Have you tried raising kids, these days?

Let me give you my address and send me some funds. I buy what I want to buy. You buy what you want to buy. Try sitting in a house with no heat, gas, electricity, tv, or phone but tell my family to sit around the fire while I play my new Elrick and Mesa gear that I spent the bill money with.

Im talking about turning off the lights when you leve the room, leaving the thermostat at reasonable, but conservative levels, and doing with a cheaper TV instead of something big, if any TV.

Im not talking about spending on an Elrick and Mesa, Im talking about living within your means while letting the people who invested their time and money into the designs you are buying have means to live within.

Now, I do think Behringer´s business practices are wrong and I have nothing but respect for all the people who refuse to use their products. It´s a good thing to do.

But at the same time I am thinking that ethical consumership or whatever you call it, is a luxury that only rich people can afford. And before you can say anything I claim that we are rich, you Americans and us Western Europeans. Really, really rich.

I´m not saying that the ethical aspects of Behringer shouldn´t be talked about. I´m all for enlightening the public. But we must remember that we don´t know anything about the situations other TBers are living in. It´s not easy being poor in a world that revolves around consumption. And to be honest, TB isn´t always helping. Just look at all those "Who´s got the biggest and baddest rig" and "how many basses do you own" threads. Can you really blame people for GASing for stuff thet they cannot afford and jumping on a deal like the infamous Behringer head when they see it?

My current basses are a Cort/Elrick JPS5 and a Brice HXB 6 string with the Bubinga top. I also own an Avatar 210. Currently not real top of the line things. Like some other guys I have seen on here, we are trying to maximize the dollar. I have gotten nothing but compliments from my bass playing friends on my tone. If you spend time on your technique and not so much on what you have you can make anything sound good. :bassist: :bassist: :bassist:

Nickman I understand what you are putting down but I can only do what I can do. Me and the misses have a little arrangement. Whatever I spend on gear she gets to spend the same amount. So a $1000 purchase for me turns into $2000.

GM, Ford, Chrysler, Honda, Toyota, Kia, BMW, Saab, and every other car manufacturer does the same thing. How many here are refusing to purchase/lease/rent/steal/etc. automobiles and only ride bikes? **oh wait - bicycle manufacturers do it too!**

Plus, I've found that most people that start out with "entry level" equipment such as Behringer will either: A: Stop playing, or B: Use the "entry level" gear as stepping stones into more reputable name brands - i.e. QSC, Ashdown, Hartke, or whoever else Behringer or possibly someone else has borrowed/stolen engineering ideas from.

It's the way of the money making world - whether it's the US, China, Japan, or whoever else! Everyone here has willingly purchased something from a company that has done the same exact things. Let's not even talk about the cell phone manufacturers!!!

:)

I would prefer to buy new when I can because used sometimes is trouble and a lot of my choices lately have come from you guys at Talkbass. You all have hipped me to some good stuff. The stores around my way have crap as far as used gear and anyway Nickman how can you tell me what to spend for my gear. You are not signing any of my paychecks!!!!!

Im just saying you should take those guys who designed the gear into consideration.

I understand but who should I consider more, the designers or myself. I know it is a sad statement but if it came down to either you or the other guy either going down or losing your job, what would you do? This is big business and people are going to win and some are going to lose. The only time we really seem to care is when it happens to us. :hmm: :hmm: :hmm:

Are you going to lose your job by buying a simpler rig?

I own one piece of Behringer equipment - some rackmount enhancer/limiter that I rarely use (which is irrelevant in this case). I stopped buying Behringer after having a conversation via PM with a respected poster about their practices.

But that's just ME.

While I don't like what I've heard about Behringer or their practices, I'm not going to suggest that someone sacrifice his house's internal temperature or watch Chachi in Charge* on an 18" just so he can eventually save up to buy a higher priced amp when an alternative that suits HIM (or her) already exists at a lower price. Sure, I agree with the principle stated concerning the practices of Behringer, but what the hell - who am I to say what anyone should or should not buy?

To each his/her own. All I can do is concern myself with what I choose to buy.

*Apologies to our international members who have never enjoyed the delights of this fine Scott Baio/Willie Aames vehicle.
