arachnophobia...

Recently, one of my housemates was walking up the stairs when he shrieked and came back down, only to tell me that there was a huge spider on the stairs. Typically I, being the macho man, thought 'pfft yeah right, like it's THAT big'.
This thing was freakin' massive!
Easily the largest house spider I've ever bore witness to (not that they get that big here anyway...). I'd give it a rough estimate of approx. 7cm., maybe less.

The only trait that gives me the shivers with certain spiders is the speed factor, the British Wolf Spider for instance and the fact that they tend to run straight for you. Considering the immense size difference I've got to give it to them, they certainly do have a pair. I used to be fine with putting them outside by hand but the inherent primordial fear seems to have caught-up a little somewhere along the line.

This is what the garden spiders around here look like:

Note that it's as big as the cicada its eating.

It is silly how we are massive giants to some of these harmless, tiny, little innocent creatures... yet we are so terrified of them. I give my friend credit.. she does not mess around... She once tried to catch a centipede with her bare fingers... She managed to catch a leg or two a few times but they got ripped off as it tried to run. But she was persistent before it got away.

I admired this behavior (amongst many of her qualities) and attempted to do these things myself. So one day there was a moth in the house.. I ballsed up and grab it by the wings and let it go. I did it, but that thing creeped me the %(#* out.

The spiders help keep the wasps and hornets away, so they get to stay unless they get too close.

My mom wants us to kill everything on sight, but I can't bring myself to off something that's keeping REAL pests away.

Girlfriend wants a tarantula... the pet varieties are typically non-aggressive and their bites aren't so venomous.

I'll eventually work my way up to holding it. I'm not arachnophobic, but I think most sane human beings would be a bit scared to hold a tarantula.

It helps that she has me acclimated to rats and snakes already.

Just took a few pictures of this critter I was fortunate enough to capture....IMG_0097.jpg IMG_0100.jpg
Sorry about the poor quality. I know many of you have likely seen far bigger but I've really never seen spiders this large wandering around inside houses. This is the second in the last week I've found.:eyebrow:
