my wife is an international tax consultant for large corporations. she has worked for ups, home depot, simmons, att, and many others, in her 20 year career. she's been pursued to be a revenue agent of the irs on two occasions, offered jobs both times.

she has constantly been held back and hindered in her career advancement, and underpaid as well, by ignorant attitudes held by ignorant men. and yet, she still makes more money than i do, and probably 99% of the folks on this site. and takes care of our daughter. and me.



none of the professional women i have ever met or worked with in my field (software engineering/web design) have ever exhibited that kind of attitude, even though i live in the south and a lot of the ignorant stay-at-homes have it in spades.

and of course neither does my wife. on the other hand, she's had to put up with being hit on, being denegrated, having her intelligence insulted by barely sentient proto-simians, and being treated as 3/4 of a professional, all because of her gender.

the "equality" still goes the other way.

I don't think any of this is sexist - it is an opinion and if it is sexist then the whole topic would qualify - thought it was OK to express your opinion - some of which was tongue in cheek. If it is upsetting or violates the modicum of decency here - I can live with it being removed.

By the way, my wife is also a Professional (Financial VP) as am I - and yes she is underpaid for her experience and education level. I still think the equality thing is not.

sorry man, i realized after the fact that i was pretty hardcore when i didn't really mean to be, and didn't really need to be. i figured you might have just been being a little tongue in cheek afterwards.

i guess hearing all the stuff my wife has endured for the past 2 decades, along with the crap my mom had to endure her whole professional life (2 degrees, single mom until i was 6) sorta makes me too prone to r4g3p0st on this topic :).

What I meant to say was... If the US tries to go back to the 1950's society, the world economy will crush us.

Different cultures have crafted so many different roles for masculinity and femininity throughout the ages that this question is not really applicable unless you:

a) pick one

b) believe that subjective, temporary interpretation is absolute

Is our cuture changing as technology alters our daily lives? Duh. Does that mean that the roles that all people engage in are different from those of previous generations? Well, yeah, duh, again. It's hard to have a generation of cowboys when the economy demands office jobs.

As for "feminizing" of men, I believe that our gametes are actually degrading, so arguably we're becoming more masculine in relation to the ova, which is the only consistent definition of male/female.

No. Teaching him to fight, when to fight. When to dis somone & how, when to let it go. How to use hand tools, work on cars, lift weights. We constantly talk about what constitutes a hot chick. Metal is awesome, pop is gay. The many uses or mis-uses of the planet/word Uranus. Signing your name as Mike Hunt, when there is a subsitute teacher. Phoney phone calls. Worshiping Howard Stern & Bubba the Love Sponge. Hot Rods/Nascar. Fun with farting....you know, guy stuff.

There's one thing I always tell him. As a man, you don't have to stand out in this world, but you do have to stand up.

In America I believe men are being "feminized" The good/bad of that and to what degree is an issue of debate, and personal opinion.

However, In the U.S. has anyone else noticed the "men are idiots/weenies" trend:rolleyes:. If you watch television almost every advertisement has a "men are idiots/weenies" moment. Every security commercial (ADT, Brinks etc) Always has a woman answering the phone with the men in the background, when the "everything ok" call comes in from the operator. As to indicate the male is afraid to take charge, the guy even has an I'm about to crap my pants from fear look on his face. Men are the need for carpet cleaning services, we're the only gender that spills and makes messes. We're right there with the dog dragging his butt across the carpet.:confused:

Seems to me men aren't getting the proper respect anymore. When a man isn't able to be the #1 bread winner etc, or he chooses a less "Traditional" role, he is then devalued and sometimes made to feel useless by society:mad:.

However when a woman chooses to forego a "traditional" role if you will, she is then deemed independant and elevated in some ways in society:confused:.
