Argument in store over used bass

Items in music stores are "fair game" whether you are holding them or not. Many stores put their inventory for sale online. I once had a bass at GC that sold online WHILE I WAS PLAYING IT. The salesman came up to me, very politely told me I could play it for as long as I liked, but when I was finished, it had been sold to a customer on the internet. It didn't matter that I was playing it. It mattered that it was for sale and someone else bought it.

Not sure I agree about "fair game" as I think there's a certain amount of etiquette involved. I can't imagine walking into a guitar store, seeing another guy hard at work demoing and enjoying a guitar, and saying to the salesman "I'll take that one. Here's my card." If I did that I wouldn't be surprised to find a keyed-up guitar in the case when I got it home, haha!

But I totally agree on the way stores have to handle these things.

This happened to me with a guitar. I decided to buy and when I took it up to the counter they told me it had been on hold for another customer and the hold tag had either not been placed on the guitar or it had been removed. While I was playing it the guy called in and paid for it through the mail order department. The store was a class act about it - they said that since I had it in hand and the hold tag wasn't there, they would be willing to sell it to me and tell the other guy it was sold in-store and that it was their fault. I was a little peeved but I wasn't about to buy a guitar out from under a guy. That's a jerk move in my book and I was wary of bad mojo in the fiddle if I did that.

So I went home and, upset, pulled up the store's website to gaze at the guitar. Whaddya know, there were two in stock. The other one was exactly the same save for being a year newer and as a result $50 more (same model, color, accessories, both used). I went back and bought it right away.

Anyone takes something out of your hands in an effort to intimidate you? That's assault, a crime. You take something out of my hands in a store, I will not so politely remind you that you committed assault. Continue to make an issue of it and you can explain to the police why you think you are allowed to do that.

This was a bass. Sitting on the sales floor. With a price tag on it, not a sold sign. Clearance and used items are first to pay wins.

The "dbag" committed no crime here. Total jackass, yeah, but not a criminal. If OP took it out of his hands after he picked it up off the floor, that could technically be assault depending on words exchanged and other factors. At that point, it is not paid for, the store owns it, the store decides who gets it. Let them handle it. NEVER physically intervene, guy could be a psycho waiting in the parking lot for you.

Take the high road and walk away, not a hard thing to do.

You have got to be freakin kidding me! Talk about a total over reaction, lighten up Francis, we are talking about a bass, not the holy grail. And people wonder why this world sucks today...

For as long as the item has not been paid for it's fair game? Let's say the so called "Dbag" was willing to buy the Epi and you ended up buying the bass you say was hanging on the wall. The store could have sold two basses there! Everyone happy. But by the way the drama turned out, a sure sale of the Epi to Mr. Dbag fizzled out. Thank God you bought the Epi as the store was able to sell one bass. However, let's say at the end of the day you never bought any of the basses - long after Mr. Dbag had left the store. The store just saw a sure sale fizzle into nothingness. If this were a wild west cathouse in the old days (not that I was around at that time), if you moved from the girl you were dancing with to a second one, the first one was up for grabs - even if you say you just wanted to check what's available.
