That's not what you said. Your conflation of living in a right-to-carry state with killing each other is the problem here, not anyone else's inability to recognize irony (or rather, a failed attempt at same).

I would close by suggesting the OP and his nemesis battle it out with handbags at dawn, but I don't want to stand guilty of a hate crime - or further confuse the contributors to this thread.

Thats soooo american, guns, knives, police (doing their job, not beating black people), aa winner, a loser... should watch more european movies, sometimes both guys die, and the bass jumps out of a window.

The OP had yet to decide what he wanted to buy.

The "dbag" did apparently decide. And vocally stated so. He actually said he was taking it home, right? You don't have an infinite "decide" timer. He had cash in hand ready to pay, mind made up, he wins.

What did you expect to happen? Him stand there with his arms folded for 2 hours while you decided which of the 3 bargain basement priced basses is coming home with you? Then take the scraps of what you leave behind? He knew what he wanted. You have no right to read the menu while at the front of the line holding everyone up. Order and pay or get out of line, the rest of us have better things to do than cater to you.

Check out videos of the "running of the brides" sometime. The rules of retail are crystal clear there. You aren't holding it, it's not yours, that simple.

He can compare as many as he wants. None are his though, and he certainly doesn't get dibs on them all just in case he decides he wants one of them. Trying out basses doesn't mean you get to hold them hostage- the other guy grabbed the bass because he was actually going to purchase it. Until you lay money down, you're just windowshopping.

Sure, the other guy could have gone above and beyond common courtesy and asked if the other person was planning on buying that bass. But then he's running the risk of the OP lying and saying yes just in case the OP wanted it even if the OP wasn't sure yet. That's expecting a whole lot from a stranger who just wanted to buy something that they had every right to buy.

Giving the OP the benefit of the doubt I think the other customer was in the wrong.
I had something similar happen--but no arguing or anything.
I was looking for a small, inexpensive bass practice amp I could move around easily, and one store was having a sale.
They had three Traynor TBM10s for less than half price.
I looked at them and though about it and looked around the rest of the store then came back--one was gone (It would have been my fault if all three were gone)-so I decided to see if the sound was decent or if they were noisy, etc.
I picked a bass hanging directly above the amp (An Epi SG bass-probably the closest thing to my EB 3 copy)
I plugged it in--played with it for a couple of minutes, then went to hang up the bass so I could buy the amp.
I was standing in front of the amp I had just stopped playing and a guy grabbed the amp and picked it up.
Right in front of me.
I said, calmly, "I'm buying that amp, but there's another one over there" and I pointed to the last remaining one, which had a price of $10 more for some reason.
He didn't argue, but his expression wasn't a nice one, but I couldn't just pick up the amp and hang up the bass at the same time.
I didn't think anybody would swoop in & grab the amp like that.
He handed the amp ver & grabbed the other one.
I decided to look at some other stuff and walked away carrying the amp-and i heard him get $10 taken off the price of the amp he got since the other one was that price.
I wonder what he would have done if there hadn't been another amp.
According to some here I should have lost out--but should I just dump the bass or bang it up?

Common courtesy is disappearing quickly.
It's barely there.

recently I was at the same store during a sale and there were two or three pedals on a shelf-away from where the pedals were displayed.
A guy was looking at some mics and when I walked up to see what pedals they were the guy said (Calmly) that they were his pedals. he was just looking at the mics--so I left them alone--they were his.
He couldn't look at the mics with pedals in his hands.

I did find a volume pedal later that I bought--but the other pedals I tried out were left alone by others as I switched between them.
That day there was common courtesy.

I ALMOST scored an awesome deal on a used Epipone Goth Thunderbird for $89!

Went in a local store I hadn't been in in forever cause its 45 miles from my house.

As I was checking out the used section it caught my eye and sure enough $89!

The store had a ton of used gear, sales guy said they had been stock piling for the holiday season and just put it all out. Literally guitars stacked 2 and 3 deep leaning against each other.

That's when this beauty caught my eye. It was just leaning there against a cab, so I pick it up and say "$89 oh this is coming home with me."

So then all of a sudden this Dbag, who was sitting nearby playing a different bass, turns to me and says "What are you doing? I'm playing that."

Then the argument ensues. He reached out and tried to grab it right out of my hand. So now me a dbag are both holding onto the T-bird. Sales guy hears us and walks over and ask if there is a problem.

Dbag explains while still holding on to the neck that he was playing it and had set it down. I said I had just walked up and saw it just sitting there, while Dbag was sitting nearby playing a different instrument.

So sales dude ask us if we needed the manager. Me and dbag argued back and forth a few times and sales guy walked off, I'm assuming to get the manager. Second or two after he did I decided it wasn't worth it. I let go of the bass and was like "Man I don't even need that pos." and walked off.

It pissed me off to no end. Stupid Dbag can have it if he's gonna be such a jerk about it.

Guhhh...maybe it's where I'm from, but having the decency to ask "Hey man, are you still playing with this?" doesn't seem foreign or outside the realms of "Common courtesy" at all. Since you can only carry so many basses in your hands, it makes sense to not pick one up and carry it around everywhere with you, it's not like he put it on the rack and ran over when the guy tried to pick it up. I'd even be hesitant to pick something up and play it in a store in this situation, much less "claim" it.

I'll just have to remind myself to take my steak dinner with me while I pee at a restaurant, don't want someone taking it from me since I hadn't paid for it yet and walked away... :rollno:

There is an EBMM Stealth at the GC here and I play it every time I go in there. Based on the OP's entitlement law, this along with the fact that I really want it, make it officially mine. It'll be good to know that if someone is playing my Stealth Stingray the next time I go in there and has decided to buy it, I can just take it from the dbag's hands before he gets to the dbag counter with his dbag money.

In the scenario painted by the OP my first thought would be to politely walk this instrument up to the counter after playing it, rather than setting it down and walking away. I would tell the guy behind the counter - whomever he might be from among the store's staff - that it looks like I'm buying this instrument today and would like them to hold it up front for me while I check out a couple of other instruments and some other gear too. :)
