Artists everyone likes that you don't understand

With respect to Tom Petty, There are about 1000 songs from him that you likely never even heard. Based on the top 40 hit list I would agree with you but his other stuff is pure Gold. IMO of course.
You know I'll jump on Amazon music and give some of the other stuff a try but really it's his voice as much as anything and that's a hard thing to get past.

I hate to sound like a complainer, and I'm not trying to bash any of these bands/artists. They're all amazing musicians and most of them were a lot better than me when they were 20 than I am now, after years and years of practice. So there's that.

Simon and Garfunkel. I have nothing against either of them, and I like some of Paul Simon's solo stuff. But the S&G albums, I just don't get it. I guess I just can't relate.

Fleetwood Mac, after Peter Green and Danny Kirwan left. I just don't get it. I respect their musicianship, but unless it's the original lineup, I'm out.

Same with Supertramp. I just can't get into it. Funny thing is, Supertramp is one of those bands that remind me of being a kid, as per that other thread, because I had a baby sitter who loved them and used to crank it up whenever they'd come on the radio. She was really nice, and they were a good, respectable, drama-free band, but I just could never get into it.

Kansas. Awesome musicians and I totally respect it, but what the heck was that about? Twenty minutes of diddly-doodly-deedly-deedly organ music. I will admit that Carry On My Wayward Son is fun to play on the bass, though.

Anthrax. I love old school metal and lots of the thrash stuff, but listening to this band was like having somebody hammer nails into my ears.

I'm happy that other people like this stuff, if it makes them happy. I'll even cover any of these bands without complaint, if it involves money or it's really special to somebody with whom I like playing. They just don't get me up and going.
Amazing, you would not be my music buddy. Anthrax is my favorite metal band, and the rest you listed are pretty top notch too.

I became a generally happier person when I realized that I don't have to actively dislike things I don't like.

For me, this has to do with whether or not I am forced to listen to it. I don't actively dislike Springsteen or The Rolling Stones because I never hear their music. But that rap genre where the rappers think they can sing is something I am regularly subjected to and I actively dislike it with extreme prejudice.

Pink Floyd, Tom Petty and the Greatful Dead come to mind for me.

I like Pink Floyd but I can get why someone wouldn't like them. I'm not generally a fan of rock bands that don't really rock all that much...like that Travelling Dingleberry band Petty was in. Boring "singer/song writer" stuff etc.

I haven't seen Metallica listed yet. I guess everyone likes them. Except me. And I'm a guy who likes metal.

They were mentioned earlier.

The Crapenters. There, I said it. Some seem to really revere them, and I don't want to speak ill of the dead, but the soupy, syrupy Karen Carpenter always left me cold. Yeah, I know, Joe Osborn, blah, blah... And Joe Osborn was amazing with America, don't have to listen to the Carpenters just to hear him.

I see a lot of bands and music listed here that I like, and I can deal with it. Except for Vulfpeck, take it back.

There are just too many artists here for me to list them all, many of whom have already been mentioned. People have even implicated entire genres that I agree with (country and opera top those lists, and jam bands next after that). But I figured out a while ago that I needed to not conflate "artists I don't like" with "artists I don't respect." For example, I can't stand Bob Dylan because he has an atrocious singing voice, but I certainly respect him as a songwriter and especially a lyricist. So when I say "I don't like Dylan" I always try to add "but I respect him." And on the flip side, there's stuff that I like that I don't expect other people to like, or even to respect. That's OK, that's just a taste thing.

A lot of the artists that I respect but don't like just have to do with their singing voice. Several have mentioned Springsteen here, and yeah, I just cannot stand his voice. Same with Tom Petty (I'm with @Ryno1330 on this apparently.) Frankly, I don't care how much "pure gold" there is in his back catalog unless someone else sings it. His nasally, whiny voice just grates on me too much. Others on this list include Nirvana, Metallica, GNR. Sometimes Geddy's voice gets to me, but sometimes it's OK. But there are others for other reasons. Different things get under different people's skin.

And on the flip side, there are artists I really like that have been listed by other people. That's cool--as others have said, the world of music would be pretty boring if we all liked the same stuff.

Wynton Marsalis

OK yeah, technically gifted, knows jazz history inside out, yeah I get it. BUT I cannot get past:

1) His pointedly UNORIGINAL music, just slavishly rehashing 60's Miles or 40's-50's Ellington etc. Miles and Duke already did it and did it FAR BETTER! None of Wynton's music has anything to distinguish itself.

2) His elitist pontificating and just outright arrogance directed at anyone that doesn't exactly follow the straight-ahead pure jazz ethic.

Sadly, Wynton to me, epitomizes why a lot of people are turned off to jazz.
