Hi, I now have the 1st ashbory from 1988. I need help with stringing with Thunder reds, and with setting the peg style tuners. It has Thunder reds on it, and the way they are wound on the peg, they are slipping. I'm new here.

Hey Mike. Google stringing an Ashbory bass. Large Sound has original instructions. Hand tightening the knob in bass of tuning peg will cause it to snug up.

Thank you. I saw that the original instructions are to use an overhand knot. Whoever strung the reds didn't do that. I will destring and restring using the knots, and gently snug up the pegs. The diam of the red G string is much smaller than the original string type and I will try knotting and folding back the end to prevent slipping. Thanks!

Anyone know about froovs , member #10 ? I know she had some health issues , but she just disappeared .
There's a club? A couple of weeks I was flipping through an old thread here and someone mentioned an Ashbory. "Hmm, what's that?" I spent an hour hunting for information followed by another hour of shopping and then there was an impulse purchase. As one does.
It's quickly become the thing that I reach for when I just want to noodle for a couple of minutes.

In any case: New strings day for my '84 Ashbory!
Knowing that lurking inside its gig bag, the original blue G on the Ashbory was quietly self-destructing (as they are/were wont to do), I sent for some Aquila Thunderblack strings. The original Thunderguts are interesting, but I wasn't much for their creamy off-white color. I strung up the black versions a few days ago, and gave them some time to stretch out and settle in before trimming up the ends this afternoon. I must say, they do look quite nice:
The Thunderblacks blend in particularly well with the upgraded black tuners:
The factory knots on the Aquilas sit nicely inside the recess under the bridge, unlike the original strings, which had been left with longer ends jutting out (see previous post, linked above). That never really bothered me before, but since this particular bass was missing its bridge cover when I rescued it from an Atlanta GC, this little "cleanup detail" was a happy accident, and a welcome improvement.
With a fresh 9v battery installed to awaken the piezo pickup, I plugged it into the amp for a test drive. By and large, the strings do quite well! Good, fat tone, and plenty of oomph with the knobs at full crank. The E feels a just bit floppy compared to the original, but since it's also the thickest of the four, I'm thinking it should settle in a bit more yet, and allow for some more tightening up down the road. I also note that compared to the original strings, these do live up to Aquila's description, offering a noticeable reduction in finger noise, both upon plucking and left hand movement.
Purely for the sake of sentiment, I rolled up the original strings to keep in the pocket of the gig bag (after all, they've lasted all the way from 198r to now, so it seems fitting that they deserve to stay with the bass). I figure these strings should last the rest of my time with this cool little relic, but if they don't for some reason, at least the rise of U-basses should mean one won't have to wait too long to get a fresh set, should the need arise.

Had you tried the Thunderguts? That's what are on my Guild Ashbory, and while I'm not inclined to change them just for color's sake, I'm sure the black would look better than the cream against metallic red, so should I ever need to replace them . . .
Those are the ones! I've read a lot of reviews in several places by people who had used them on Ashborys, and didn't see any problems mentioned. There's also a nice writeup at largesound about Aquilas on Ashborys:

I have no reason to think your Ashbory will have any issues. The only possible hiccup I could imagine would be if you still had the old banjo-style tuners on there, but if you have the newer versions, you should be good to go.
Incidentally, I see that the Amazon link you posted shows only one set left. If that one gets sniped away from you, Strings By Mail carries Aquilas of both "Thunder" varieties.
ETA: Having just looked at Aquila's specs on but ThunderGuts and ThunderBlacks, they both show identical gauges for both types.
I had not tried the Thunderguts. My choice was based purely on shallow aesthetics.
Until I put these on this week, my Ashbory still had the original strings on it from '84 (see the older post I linked to above for pics of those).
Aquila does also make ThunderReds... just sayin'. Thunder Reds | Aquila Corde Armoniche
Slightly thinner gauges on the larger two strings, but should still work, I would think.

I now have a red DeArmond in addition to my ivory Guild!! The Guild has the thunderreds on it and I really enjoy them - longer sustain than on the thundergut strings which I have on the DeArmond. I really do enjoy these little basses! How are the thunder blacks, compared to the thunder guts?
Thanks for the link! I found a set for a little less on eBay, I'll give those a shot. A reason to get the Ashbory out of the case!
Hey Ashbory Peeps! Stumbled across this rarity on a Norwegian classified site - a puported Bill Wyman owned/played example going for the princely asking price of ~$3000... no idea of how genuine this is but thought it might be of interest to the club none the less...
