What was your reason for choosing carrots?

that's actually a pretty funny story. about 15 years ago my guitarist friend and i were going to put together a zappa cover band, and were looking for drummers. we auditioned them by a sort of baptism of fire, playing a couple toons along with an improv jam live at an open mic at a bar in atlanta (think we did part of father oblivion and city of tiny lights). anyway, one of the nights we were doing this we found this little stuffed animal carrot - it was about a foot long, a carrot with a face and some sewn-on feet and hands. the pointy end of the carrot had some conspicuous stains on it that inspired me to dub it the lesbian love carrot in a fit of overactive imagination.

our little carrotty friend became our mascot for the evening (as well as what we called ourselves during the open mic - LLC). we displayed him prominently on the bass drum as we played and all was well.

after we finished, this "earthy", "folksy" chick came up to us and said she liked our music and could she please have her carrot back. apparently her equally earthy roomate/duet partner dropped the carrot as they were loading in. mr. carrot then became their mascot, as they regaled us with indigo girls covers.

this experience taught me the versatility of our friend the underappreciated, dedicated and reliable carrot.
