Asking her father

Does anyone else find the practice of asking the father of your girlfriend permission to propose to his daughter as disrespectful to the girl you are interested in? It strikes me as reducing the girl to the status of being a personal possession of the father.

I'm pretty conservative, but... back in 1982 when I proposed to my wife, I didn't ask permission. I figured it was her decision, not his. About 25 yrs later, my daughter's boyfriend asked me. I told him it wasn't my choice, it was hers (but thanks for askin').

Speaking of food and weddings, in the late 60's we used to sometimes do traditional eastern european weddings (Polish, Ukrainian, Russian, etc). They have some of the best food you will ever find. People push food on you saying eat! eat! A great gig if you can get it.

I put on 30 lbs. being married to a Greek lady. Yeah, they know how to put on the feedbag. I've been to baptisms where they had catered at-table service...none of that buffet line b.s. Ooopa!

You know, going through the thread again, it seems You're at least half right.

But that was before anyone who's not on board with the tradition in question where called out as being spineless, disrespectful, brainwashed-by-feminism ass***** who are nothing but a waste of space. Funny how that can spark further discussion, isn't it?

Jesus. No kidding. Things were rocking along fine until two or three folks completely blew a gasket and started spouting insults. Talk about disrespectful.

Not to mention hypocritical. Ever notice that when angry people who want everybody to think and act a certain way write online diatribes about "those other people", they always accuse them of wanting everyone to think and act a certain way?

That being said, I'm not ever getting married, so some of you can rest assured that I have so much respect, I'll keep your daughter at arms length so I can pack my stuff and leave when I find out your little angel cheated on me with the local weed dealer. ;) :D

I totally agree bro - the asking for permission OR asking for blessing is an optional. Some, self included to a point, got a little butt-hurt for a variety of reasons. Some did the ask-dad, others have daughters and would like one chance to give their final answer.
