Does Ibanez still make the US ATK? I'm very interested in one of these.
This guy is a great player and he's playing both the US model and the 305.

To my ears, they both sound good, but the US model has something very different in its tone. It's actually one of the best sounding basses I've ever heard.
Does the US model use a different type of pickup or preamp?

They don't still make them. They had a "bunker" neck. All of the older ATK's(90's) had a different preamp than the newer ones.

Initial observations:
Not horribly heavy. Maybe 10 pounds? Not a lightweight, but not a back breaker either.
The red sparkle finish is REALLY sparkley. Wow. It's more flamboyant than I expected.
The pickguard is actually pearloid, which I didn't realize/expect. Looks pretty sharp overall.
The frets are a touch on the sharp side. Nothing that makes it unplayable, but it might need a touch of filing.
I haven't plugged it in yet, but I think I might run it home today over lunch to make sure everything works.

Eww. I just read your sharp frets comment. Nothing screams cheap bass like poorly filed frets. If I paid 500 bucks for that I would be upset. Hopefully not all are like that.

I wouldn't buy another ATK even at these prices. Mine, after going back time after time to my ace repairman, kept having this HORRIBLE huge blast of feedback surge from the pickup totally at random, almost deafening the damn crowd.
They were made waaaaaay better back in the 90's, especially with the Bunker necks. That guy who bought the silver ('95?) 5'er on here not too long ago got a kickass piece.

Cor-Tek's electronics were always their short suit. These have SMT boards and too-complex wiring. I went through both of mine and they're OK, but there were a bunch that weren't. It was better when they through-board PCBs, which are hugely more serviceable by the average "guitar tech."

I have owned 3 atk's in the past, great basses but nothing i would pay 500$ for , i also would ot pay 550$ for a MIM fender.
If mine is of poor quality , its getting posted on craigs

I think it looks pretty dang sweet! Mine should be here tomorrow!
Fret sprout is not a matter of that so much as long, non-optimum storage and yo-yoing neck moisture content.
I've seen it at all price points.
I know of no production bass with any real, professional fretboard build as part of the production routine. None.
Exactly. Musicmans, for example, are known for this during seasonal changes, and I certainly don't consider that a cheap bass. I also think their fret work is outstanding (I was able to get my Stingray's action lower than nearly any other bass I've owned), and it wasn't severe fret sprout, but it still does happen, and can easily be resolved by either taking it to a tech to fix or changing where/how it is stored.
Moto? Is that mother of toilet something or another? If I don't like the color when I get it, it will "say hello to my little heat-gun"
I imagine it is hard to photograph though.
