AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

Had an absolutely ridiculous fun gig last night. My wife and I got home Thursday morning from a 3 week international vacation. Had a rehearsal Thursday night, and a gig opening for Otep last night. We played to a pretty full house, and I ended up using my TC118 for on stage only.
The stage room we had was a little cramped since Otep's setup was on there and pretty big. I had my TC118 at the end of the stage, firing across it. Probably about a 30' wide stage. Guitarist and keyboardist on the other side of the stage had zero issue hearing me clearly! For myself, I was super happy with what I was hearing - basically, what was coming out of that lil cab was what I was hearing from FOH as well during sound check. What I was hearing was what everyone was hearing. Towards the end of our set things got a bit loud and the TC118 just thumped along.

I know I likely sound like a broken record at this point, but I just still am amazed and so happy every damn time I use my rig. I play through an Ampeg 8x10 at the rehearsal spot, which is of course its own experience - but I much, much prefer what I hear out of the TC118. I had the chance to talk to several folks about my entire setup last night, and had a couple of people lift up the TC118. They were all expecting it to be heavy and awkward, but then realized that it is neither. It was cool to load in - rack in one hand, TC118 in the other, and bass on my back. For load out, another person (drummer/sound guy) grabbed my TC118 for me and carried it to my car, and was again impressed with the weight, and as a sound guy was also impressed with the tone I had all night.

I still remember the first time I plugged into a AudioKinesis / Thunderchild cab. I didn't realize that soon after, and for so long after getting my own, that I'd be so happy and content with my setup. I'm a gear whore, and have always been searching for things that will fit my needs. Up until the TC, it's been a series of compromises (cost, weight, complexity, or tone). I feel like I'm at the summit now, and have nothing in my way except my own abilities. What a liberating feeling to have.

@DukeLeJeune - I know you're working on logo stuff as you get time. If it is possible, I sure would also like a bumper sticker sized sticker as well that I can slap some place :).

I agree with the logo thing. I'd love to have one for my cabinet AND a bumper sticker if there's one available. :thumbsup:

The TC112v3 made it completely clear LaBella gold tapes are not my jam and I'm really looking forward to my RA Mouse showing up. I think my Squarmoth's days are numbered unless I do something about the noise it's generating.

Waiting on some copper white tapes myself...what didn't you like about the golds?

This speaker definitely has me hearing details I hadn't heard before.

It's hard to describe. I'm coming from a set of EB cobalt flats that I really liked (punch for days) but that started to sound... a little off for what I'm going for. A little thin? That particular bass, while a joy to play, is somewhat problematic from a hardware standpoint. It has some prototype pick ups in it along with an Aguilar OBP-2 preamp and an active/passive bypass switch. Its guts are PACKED, and it hisses horribly. Everything else being exactly the same, my Hwy One Jazz with Lollars and an Audere preamp is damn near silent.

Anyhow, so I'm fighting that issue and the tapes are a joy to play, they feel fantastic, though the tension is a little higher. The tone is just... I can't describe exactly why I'm not digging it. A tad lifeless? That's about the best I can do. I'm looking for a fatter, warmer, tone, but that doesn't lack presence and focus. Ugh... tone chasing. I really hope the Mouse puts an end to this.

I haven't! Flats? Tapes? Rounds? All the above? This is on a fretless, fyi.

Took me a bit to actually get to the strings on his website. Looks like nothing but rounds and, while I'm not one to worry about fingerboard damage from rounds, I prefer the feel of flats for fretless.

I'll probably go back to the cobalt flats and just get an Audere pre and new pick ups down the road. I'm not ready to give up on the frankenfretless just yet, but I'm getting close.

Im using the labella low tension flats that are similar to the TI flats on my fretless. The feel is supple on the finger and a deeper tone than the the TI's. I'm using Pete's balanced tension nickels on my fretted Skjold's. The feel is very comfortable and the tone is what I'm looking for in a nickel set. He has nickels and as sets custom sets available.

Yeah I was out of touch for a while in the final days leading up to a high-end home audio show in Chicago, and then still playing catch-up when I got back. Here's a shot of the speakers I showed, they're kinda reminiscent of the original version of the Thunderchild 212:

Photo by Herb Reichert of Stereophile magazine. Those are output-transformer-less (OTL) tube amps, in case anyone was wondering. And you can see one of my four-piece "Swarm" subwoofer modules behind the right speaker.

Looks like I may be heading out of town again tomorrow morning, so it may be next week before I'm hanging out here with any regularity again.

did you get it? how is it? also, even though it doesn't show under audiokinesis, a search for hathor on their website comes up with a cover for it. it costs the same as the cover for the tc112 ($69). is that correct?

I got the Tuki 1203 cover on schedule. It is really well made, including the padding. It fits snugly without being too tight. The access for the handle is clean, and there is a bonus Velcro strap on the bottom. I believe the price is correct, plus shipping. It's a fine compliment to this great cabinet.
