AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

I heard Skip's G#00 tuned bass at a GTG in Seattle a few years ago, and he explained to me how the instrument was to be used. My understanding is that it's not a replacement for a normal bass guitar - it's more like a sustained-note "change the feeling in the entire room" instrument, almost a like pipe organ on a strap. And even if the first two or three overtones are effectively missing in action, the harmonic richness from the overtones being so close together (only 13 Hz apart instead of 31 Hz apart for low-B) is a trip all by itself.

That's great, Duke. Or should I say that it is swell? (Stop him before he makes another organ pun. Doh! He did it again.)

Surely, in addition to making the music somewhat more portable, Skip's bass avoids pipe organists' age-old problem of neck dive.

so. that cab can move some air.

the quake bass was tuned to low f#. massive string, 39-inch scale.

i was interested in how it would react to muted, with hard attac and a lot of treble rolloff. (i like to make the bass sound really thuddy at times.) i was going for an orchestral bass drum sound.

this guy comes down the aisle asking what the hell this is. we talk. i say i was trying to make it sound like an orchestral bass drum. he says that's what it sounded like down the aisle and he wanted to see what was doing that. :)

fun cab, if a little big for my needs.

So there you have it, the real reason that cab didn't go into production is, the name was just too long. It's probably a good thing I'm not in charge of naming Phil Jones's bass cabs...

Yep, it was pretty cool. I had a go with this Wilcox Stylus EUB prototype:

...which has Lightwave optical pickups and a ~42" scale length and can make an insane amount of fundamental, especially when driven by a Jule Monique amp. I lifted the pic from my Facebook feed; not sure who the lovely player in question is, but I heard that she sounded great on that thing.

Did a couple of gigs with the obnoxiously loud trio last weekend. It's been a while. Since I was selling my third cab I didn't want look like I was hyping the cabs but now it's gone, so you can believe when I say I still couldn't be happier with the 1203's. Friday night was both cabs in a familiar room and they were just slamming with the minimega.

Saturday was a different place that turned out to be a 3 bay truck garage under a veggie cafe. Not a huge place so I only took in one cab (because we had recently discussed how we were going to "play the room" and not be obnoxiously loud in smaller places and have actually made progress in that direction). But singer/songwriter/guitarist with the 100 watt 2x12 struck again and we were blasting. Even the drummer said he was too loud. I don't say anything anymore. One little hathor in the corner kept up with no problem.

The first gig convinced me I didn't need 3 cabs, the second was confirmation and this came up for sale nearby...

...so events were set in motion. So now I'm a dual hathor dingwaller.

I have yet to do a gig where more than 1 Hathor was needed lol. I have a tc thunderchild 112 and dream of running them both together.

Dingwall + AudioKinesis is a combination that is very, very hard to beat. Best basses and cabs out there, bar none. Grats on the Combustion :D

Well I don't have my TC112s yet, but you're telling me I shouldn't have sold my combustion and ordered (and waited 4 months for) this?! :D

Will be running Compressore -> LM3 -> TC112s though, so a pretty similar setup otherwise.

Hey, F's are nice too. Just not my bag :). Annnnnnd you can't get a Combustion in a 6 string. And a Canadian order is at least 12 months wait time now :D
