more a comment on the folks wanting to go lower than an A or a B, which i find somewhat difficult.
I heard Skip's G#00 tuned bass at a GTG in Seattle a few years ago, and he explained to me how the instrument was to be used. My understanding is that it's not a replacement for a normal bass guitar - it's more like a sustained-note "change the feeling in the entire room" instrument, almost a like pipe organ on a strap. And even if the first two or three overtones are effectively missing in action, the harmonic richness from the overtones being so close together (only 13 Hz apart instead of 31 Hz apart for low-B) is a trip all by itself.
