AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

@been_effected...Has Mr. Lejeune has been responding to your emails within the past 8 days??

I sent him an email over a week ago (16 Oct) wanting to buy 2 Hathor 1203's, with an added question about the 1203T (tall) that's not listed on Audiokinesis website. Haven't heard anything back, so I figured he's too busy right now, on the road, or ill.

I used the email address, [email protected], which is listed in his website. Is this the email you use?

Anyway, if you, or anyone, has email corresponded with him within the last 8 days, let me know and I will send a new email. It's possible I got lost in the large amount of emails he probably receives.

Thanks

Looks like he's come back to you :)

I work in IT. A well kept secret is that there is no guarantee that an email sent is an email received.

As a former business owner, I also know that sometimes it takes a while to respond to emails.

Hope you two can connect. Duke is a fine sort of guy and has a stellar reputation here.

I work in IT too - what area are you in specifically?

And yeah, couldn't agree more re: email delivery. Doubly so when it comes to free accounts (Outlook.com, Yahoo, Gmail etc.) given users don't really get access to message tracking logs to confirm what the hell happened...

I have limited exposure to the Genzler 12-3 slant and a lot of experience with the TC112, although I haven't heard them side by side. I have not heard the Hathor or Changeling. Based on users' descriptions of the Hathor/Changeling cabs being more grindy/mid-forward than the TC112, I think the 12-3SLT is a lot closer to the TC112 (smooth, balanced, tight but strong low end). So if you look at tonal comparisons of the Thunderchild series vs. the Hathor/Changeling series, you'll get a pretty good idea of how the 12-3SLT compares to the Hathor/Changelings.

I hope that makes some sense!

Bob

Interesting, given the Genzler uses Faital's 3" rather than a horn.
I do wonder how the Genzler cabs would handle drives - probably potentially better.

Do you use drives much, Bob? How do you find the TC handles it?

Had to do some unscheduled plumbing in my house. And with my plumbing skills being equivalent to a small garden salad's, this day was shot.

Thank you all for the responses and suggestions. Interesting info about the free email accounts.

Thank you, Mr. LeJeune. The resent email is on its way.

HOLY SMOKES! I just got a reply back in my email from Mr. LeJeune while I was typing this. Now THAT'S responsive LOL!

Ooo, and another question (I'm sure it's been asked before, but let's do a 2018 updated version)

2 x 112 or 1 x 212?

Specifically, I'm looking to anyone who has 2 x TC112's/1 x TC212, but happy to hear from Hathor owners too.

Or, the mix and match approach - 1 x TC112, 1 x H112

I don't use drives at all. If I need a little grind I just dig in over the pickup, but even then not much.

It is interesting that the TC112 and 12-3SLT can sound similar given the difference in how they handle mids and highs, but I believe the answer is in the magic of Duke's selection of components and especially his unbelievable crossover designs. Also, with the TC112, if an overdrive sounds a little harsh you could flip down his high frequency roll-off switch, which rolls off the highs above 3.5kHz.

@been_effected, you asked about the differences between the 1203 and 1203T.

The 1203T is 22 inches tall, 4 inches taller than the original 1203 (18 inches). As Lowendtech said, and Duke verified, the tall version, with it's extra internal volume, provides a bit bigger low end for the B-string on five string basses.

1203 weighs 26 lbs., the 1203T weighs 28 lbs.. I'm over 60 with a busy gig schedule so that works for me. Alot. LOL

Do you find the T- version to give a bigger lowend with a 4 string as well?
Yes, the physics of the bigger box just make the 1203T sound a bit fuller down low. The regular 1203 does just fine here too but is a bit tighter. There are others here with both cab sizes who may have additional input.
They sound great together. My 1203 non tall is an older, single rear port design. It feels like it has a bit more low-mid punch. But my ears may be tricking me.

It would be great to hear your take on the comparison of these cabinets and the Audiokinesis. They are all top-notch gear and not many people have spent time with so many of them. If that's not appropriate for this post, I'd welcome a PM.

My own limited experience was that I owned a HT112ER and was perfectly happy with it until I heard the TC115. :) It's been long enough that I can't remember why though.

"It's been long enough that I can't remember why though." I feel the same way.
My time with those five different models covered a nearly 10 year span, with very little overlap.

Things seemed to get more mid-forward as I went along. But (thanks in-part to Talkbass), I also went through four different main-squeeze amplifiers during that time (Demeter VTBP-201s->GB Shuttle 9.0->Walkabout->Ashdown ABM500), with a few others sprinkled-in for short periods.

I can say that out of the Hathor, Baer, and Genz-Benz cabs, the Baer is the most different of the three.

The Changeling 212 comes across quite a bit darker when compared directly to the Baer stack. That and something about the low-mid voicing makes the Changeling sound tighter and more punchy. And it seems to extend deeper. I don't know if that's true. The Hathor/Changeling lows just sound deeper to me.
But the pair of Baers is massive in its own way, more growly lows with a lot more high-mid focus ("punishingly articulate", as someone else once wrote).

And just like that, I'm in line for a Hathor 1203 and a 1203T.

Gotta admit, kinda excited now.

Dealing with Duke LeJeune was an absolute pleasure. Fast, efficient, done with humor and ease.

And now, back to your regularly scheduled thread...

You have every right to be excited! That rig is gonna blow you away! :bassist: :bassist: :bassist:

Thank you, kind sir!

Starting to think I'll lean towards the TC's. Maybe 2 x 112 instead of a single 212 cab.
And only because I'm still considering running amp/cab emulation through it, so the idea of it being as "honest" as possible is appealing. I can make the TC sound like it has an 810 scoop if I need to.
Sounds like my concerns around drives sounding awful through horns is unfounded here.
