AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

I tune standard EADG 99.9% of the time.

I have two Rics, one with their stock hi-gain single coil pups with DR FatBeams steel rounds, the other Ric set up with a Toaster pup in neck position and a re-issue Horseshoe pup at the bridge. Strung with TI Flats.

I also have a Hamer PJ I configured with Fralin pups strung with GHS Precision Flats.

How about that HF driver on tbe TC212? Did I read it was not the best mid for grindy bass where paper cones rule?

Thunderchilds sound great overall, but the Hathors truly shine with overdrive. Yeah the paper cones are ideal for that… Hathors sound ideal for your tone goals.

I'd like to find out about this thing called "dual woofer mojo" IE, do two two woofers together in one cab sound better or the same as two individual woofers in their own separate cabs.

Depends on the cabs, esp. if they have mids and tweets, since those get doubled with 2 cabs, but only 1 set in 1 cab (obviously). This may be why the classic Berg HT112 stack had the EX (no tweeter). I do think there's a liitle extra magic in the 1 cab/2 woofer config perhaps cuz it's more in synch with itself, so to speak. That said, there are some cabs I prefer 2 vs. the 2 woofer (e.g., I liked 2 Accugroove Tri-110Ls vs. a Tri-210L, but liked the Whappo Jr. better than 2 Tri-112Ls (though those are not exactly apples to apples)). As Shriig said, the difference isn't great. And it probably gets lost in the mix to some degree.

Looking at the specs on AudioCircle, Duke mentions the TC212 is -3dB in the mid 50's, and the H1203 is -3dB at 63. So two H1203 would be what, -3dB's at approx 60, still not as deep as the TC212. My fEARful 15/6 Tube is -3dB at 48.

To my ears, based on a limited comparison, the tc212 (v.1, at least) goes deeper than even a wide body tc115af. Perhaps not deeper than a tc118, but I will know soon enough. :hyper: But hard to believe 2x1203 wouldn't be able to go as low as you need, esp. with some EQ, but that's only based on what I've read here.

Aggie is thicker in the mids. And way harder to schlep. Haven't played the CN212 but did have a pair of the CN112s. More air in the Berg, more upper mids in the H1203, bit more low extension in H1203, more low mid wool in CN112.

So it sounds like the DB112's and CN12's are more similar than different. Annnnnnddd it sounds like the DB's and CN's are more different from the 1203's than they are similar.

+1 I have a CN212, and I'd have to say you nailed it with that description.

Assuming identical cabs, it mainly comes down to internal volume as to which has the biggest low end. In this case, the Thunderchild 212 has more internal volume than a pair of Hathor 1203's, so it goes deeper.

We have four possible tunings with the TC212: Three ports open, two ports open, one port open, and sealed. For the stacked H1203's, we have three possible tunings: Both cabs ported, one cab sealed, and both cabs sealed. Not sure how much that difference matters out in the real world.

Duke told me the Hathor 212 is on permanent hold since he "has too many models already"

Here's my thinking on the Hathor 212 concept: It would be in approximately the same performance/weight/cost category as the 1855, and I think the 1855 would be the better cab. So my short (and weak) response to you was "too many models", but the real picture is more like "too many functionally similar models (one to be exact)".

If I do a Hathor 212, it would need to be something that fills a niche the 1855 cannot fill.

I did get an interesting challenge to do a cab that combines "traditional" bass cab mid-voicing with the top-end smoothness of my Thunderchild cabs. That one's still in the mulling-over-of-options stage, but it may end up being prototyped as a hybrid 212.

That's an H1203 sitting on top of a TC112-8 :D

Not ever hearing an 18", it is hard to place it in the line-up. Sometime I feel even my 15 may be too much. Perhaps it is soley due to all the buzz about 12's and especially dual 12's these days. Guess I gotta get out and hit some trade shows. Or start my own here so I don't have to leave town.
