AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

Well, the FedEx truck stopped by today and delivered two new TC112 cabs on my door step. I've only been able to unpack and inspect them so far. I can't wait to fire them up. Superb build quality and I can't believe how light and easy to move they are. More to follow.

You're gonna love 'em. Nothing else on the market that I've heard can compare with them.

Random question. I was looking at the various T/S parameters for the 8 ohm vs the 4 ohm version of the Faital 18HP1060. Most of the parameters are pretty close, but not exactly the same. Not being an audio wiz, I had to look up what those parameters even mean. :)

Does any of this translate to an audible difference between the 4 and 8 ohm version of your Hathor 1855?

Sorry it took me a while to get around to modeling the difference.

The 1060.4 is .2 dB more efficient, but the 1060.8's parameters translate into a slightly warmer low end.

At 82 Hz (the first overtone of low-E), the 1060.8 is about 1 dB louder, for equal wattage input. At 62 Hz (the first overtone of low-B), the 1060.8 is again about 1 dB louder. At 46 Hz (the first overtone of low-F#), they are equal. And that's where they're both about -3 dB.

So imo the difference would be audible but minor. They both have a big bottom end. I'd say go with whichever one has the impedance that makes the most sense to you.

About an hour ago I finished the most difficult cab assembly I've ever done. I've decided that small cabs are fun to build, big cabs are okay, but huge cabs are positively miserable. This experimental cab is about seven cubic feet internal volume and right now is being held together by forty-six clamps while the glue dries. This is the first time I've needed my wife's help to assemble a cab and we almost didn't make it. If I hadn't used watered-down wood glue to give us extra working time, it would have ended up as scrap. I almost hope it sucks - then I wouldn't have the dilemma of whether it becomes a product or a lesson in where my limits lie.

My next experimental cab is going to be small.

Thanks, Duke! I figured the differences between the 4 and 8 ohm version were going to be pretty small. Glad to hear that's the case.

Since I'm looking for a single cab that'll be able to handle anything I need, having the 4 ohm version makes lots of sense, as this will let me run my ShuttleMax at its full 900W.

I figure if your 1855 isn't loud enough for me I'm either doing something wrong or its time to enroll in a school for the deaf :)

Good luck with your experimental cab of doom!

Took my Composite TC15AF to what was to have been a beach side private party in a marquee. Due to bad weather this was moved inside to a dining area in a small private house 4 stories in the air on stilts. First thought was that this cab performs really well at low volumes, giving a great full tone. Second was thanks for the 33 pounds. Kudos to Duke and Mike. Drummer used brushes, singer used one PA cab. Great sounding gig.

I need to stop following this thread. I still get the urge to order up an 18 Hathor. I have zero need for it, and it would just be a trophy. I still want it though.
Yeah I did get the impression that you really don't need it, so I haven't tried to talk you into it. That wouldn't be doing you any favors.

I liked it. It has that sealed cab type tone. I've been using the ports sealed at home b/c it keeps the rattling of the cabs behind it to a minimum.

You should pick up two more plugs and give it a try. If Duke can't send you any, most plumbing stores will have them.

It's quite easy. It's a one hand carry with the top handle but it bangs my legs. The two 4-way side handles are the best. Makes carrying it a breeze.

The only change I'd make it to put an additional handle like the top handle on one of the sides. Then it would be an easy one hand carry.

Had a gig last night and I used the TC115-8 with the TH500 and Carvin SB4000. I had all the ports plugged. It sounded great.
I saw where you posted in the TH500 thread that you had a gig coming up with the TC115. I wanted to know how it went. So you are liking the new cab?

I'm still digging the 1203's. I don't think a 24 pound cab will ever get old! :D

The wait was worth it!

How's the bass with all four ports plugged. I only have two plugs and I have them in almost all the time. Even with two ports plugged, I'm still cutting the bass on my amp.

Maybe I need to close up all the ports?

Sorry I never made that right! I have boxed up two plugs and they will be mailed to you tomorrow.

How's the schlepability of that cab? My on-order Hathor 1855 is essentialy the same box but an extra 7 lbs.

The 1855 doesn't have the handle on top because the location of the board at the back of the midrange chamber would push the recessed handle too far behind the center of gravity. And it's imo too heavy and awkward for one-hand carry over any distance anyway. The big openings on the sides of the midrange chamber, along with the holes on the top, allow decent hand-holds for "walking" the cab to adjust its position on stage.
