Avatar 3 way 15/6/tweet

No, I think the Avatar just started shipping. Just wanted to provide some who have never heard this design, or only heard other clips with mostly just low end, experience the more modern, full range sound these designs are capable of.

Again, at the intro price, it would be hard to not recommend that Avatar execution if someone is interested in this type of tone profile! I'll erase the direct link post.

I have a buddy who I've been really talking up the 15/6 to (his playing style and tone profile and goals really match up well with the voicing of these things). He's on a bit more of a budget than some, so as soon as we get some feedback on the Avatar cab that suggests it is a decent execution of this design, I'm going to give him the go-ahead to get one.

I've played so many different combinations of this basic design, with various crossovers, crossover points, and mid driver brands, and they all have had a strong basic tonal similarity to me (the biggest impact to my ear is the brand of mid driver.... which can really move the tone from incredibly smooth to having a bit more upper mid brightness). He really enjoys a kind of classic 2 x 15 tone, and the Avatar in 4ohm version should give him that vibe in a smaller box with a much nicer midrange response (brighter, more articulate and less beaming/better dispersion, etc.) from those big 15's. We shall see!

I agree with you 100%, KJung. If the cab was lighter and could be shipped to me (I have a 70-pound limit, and Avatar's packing adds 20 pounds to the shipping weight) I'd have bought one already. At the intro price, I'm actually angry that I can't have one. I feel cheated. :(

I've been thinking of adding a 1x15 extension cabinet to my Carvin BR515N combo, which is just the BX500 head in a 1x15 cabinet with a horn, at 8 ohms. Any thoughts on what may result if I added the 8 ohm version of the new Avatar cab? Would I be better off just taking the BX500 out of the combo and running it with only the Avatar? I'm guessing that running both would be louder for sure, but I wouldn't want to diminish the effects of the mid driver by drowning it in lows. :hmm:

edit: Obviously, the answers would depend on what tone I'm looking for and what venue I'm playing in, but plenty of you guys know enough about the physics that I'm hoping you might be able to "guess" what it would sound like. :p Thanks!

The Avatar will take over four times the power that the Carvin 15 will before farting out, so the Carvin speaker will be a very weak link in the chain, not allowing the Avatar to give what it's capable of. Plus you'd be schepping around the Carvin combo when the head is all you need.

That's exactly the kind of answer I was hoping for, thanks Bill!

Awesome thread here with lots to learn about... thanks everyone :bassist:

Since you already have a combo, I would go for the BR15-8 for the extension. It's only 349.00 right now and would be well matched to the combo. Because of the dimensions, the combo should sit nicely on top of it also.
With the 8 ohm extension, the head would see a 4 ohm load and pump out the full 500w evenly through the combo as well as the extension. You don't gain anything by adding a 4 ohm extension, it's a mis-match.

Good idea, and I've been thinking about that. The only problem is that ever since I discovered TalkBass, I've done everything possible not to buy new gear, and I still haven't seen that cab for sale here or on CL! :crying:

$349 for an extension that will only take 1/4 the power of the Avatar at $399. The Avatar by itself will out out as much as the two Carvin cabs combined.
Not having to carry two cabs to get the same output as one is one of the major reasons for cabs like the Avatar.

Another good point, especially since I don't really need more volume, but rather, I'd like more "room-filling warmth"... would "dispersion" be the word I'm looking for? If dispersion = "room-filling warmth," than maybe ditching my combo and going with the Avatar would be the right choice since from reading this and some of the fEarful threads, dispersion is one of the main benefits of going with a 3-way cab. Correct me if I'm wrong!

The dispersion refers to mids mostly (in a two or three way design), but the Eminence 3015LF will handle the lows much better than the Carvin (or even two Carvins), thus filling the room with much more warmth. :D

I'm having a little trouble with the claims that the speaker in the Avatar will handle 4 times the power of the Carvin before farting out. Forget for a minute that LaklandMike is looking for an extension to his combo, which will only be putting out 250w to the aformentioned extension, I need for somebody to look at the specs of the Carvin NE15-8 (link below) and explain to me how the 15" speaker in the Avatar will be 4 times better.

Compare the Xmax figures.

The Carvin NE15-8 is a glorified midbass driver.

Just got done reading 30 posts of techno talk about the XMAX value and even the geeks were arguing about it's value. Seems many of the specs work together in producing the characteristics of a speaker, some of which some like and others dislike (tastes), and this doesn't even take into the consideration of the cab as a whole.

Point is LaklandMike has already posted about how much he LOVES his Carvin combo (so the speakers + cab must not suck) and a couple of you guys are telling to to rip the head out of it, toss the cab and buy a 400.00 new cab instead of adding a new 350.00 cab to his combo. Considering the speaker area he'll have by adding the new cab, I don't see how the Avatar, by itself, is going to give him a larger sonic footprint. Everything is a matter of taste or course, just not sure how you come to that conclusion.

I want to add I have been all over this Avatar cab topic and would like one myself, but I considered what Mike was saying and went from there in suggesting adding the Carvin.

Now if he had a BX500 head by iteself and was looking for a standalone cab, CLEARLY the Avatar is the better choice. At 4 ohms it seems like it would be a perfect standalone cab to a BX500, MB LMII, GK Fusion, 800RBII, etc...

Whether or not the Carvin is a good cab or not, I can believe that the Avatar will have a bigger sonic footprint. Using another type of 15/6 style cab, I can say that it has a bigger sonic footprint than the 15+2x12 setup I ran before it. Or the 4x10+112 I once ran.

One other thing to consider, dimensions;

Carvin Combo
---------------
23.8" high
18.5" deep
20.7" wide

Carvin BR115-8
----------------
25.5" high
18.5" deep
23.5" wide

Avatar TB153
-------------
27" high
16.5" deep
24.5" wide
