The point is that those Carvin drivers are displacement limited to about 150 watts of real power per driver. Halve that every time you turn up the bass knob 3db. Their thermal rating is meaningless essentially.

The 3015LF can take more, and is in reality just as sensitive if not a bit moreso. The Carvin drivers' calculated SPL falls behind by a db or so as well as

I would recommend selling the combo and getting a BX1500 and the Avatar, myself =)

The air that speakers are moving is measured in 3 dimensions. Comparing diameter is only 2, so not the wholee story. Excursion (xmax) is the 3rd dimension. More excursion equals more volume of air moved. Like comparing a dinner plate with a bucket. From above they might appear to be the same size, but clearly the bucket is more capable of carrying large volumes.

Thanks for shedding light on my Carvin/Avatar dilemma, guys. Interesting points all around. Maybe what I really need to do is put a better driver in my Carvin and call it a day! Seriously though, I've learned a lot from this "mini-debate" about the Carvin stuff and the new Avatar. :) Thanks again!

I probably missed some posts because I just skim, but combos in general are poor bets for retrofitting speakers and expecting any grand improvements. The boxes are just too small. A lot of times a combo with a removable head ends up being better by removing the head and using it with other cabs, and losing the combo cab completely.

This is probably true in most cases, although I replaced the 15 in my Roland DB 700 with a JBL K140. Sounds glorious and alot better than the original 15. Kinda gave me a B15N sound with a little more power. But, probably not a good idea in general to do with combos.

IMO there is absolutely no better cab deal (at least on paper) for Canucks. New gear prices in Montreal aren't as high as Europe or down under, but are still insanely high when compared to the US. I cannot imagine any cabs at Italmelodie or Steve's (Montreal's 2 largest music gear store's) touching this cab in terms of performance per buck.

These posts always make me laugh... If you're dying for a review, why not buy one yourself and review it for TB rather than lamenting the lack of product reviews on something that came out last week?

While I agree that the Avatar is a better cabinet, I stand by the recommendation that the Carvin 15, for 349.00, is the better option for pairing with your combo. It would be silly to tear the head out of a perfectly good cabinet and run only one cab for MORE MONEY. The combo will sit better on the Carvin cab, plus you’ll never have to turn it up so loud that the speakers will be farting out on you unless you’re in Motley Crue. :rolleyes:

I'd sell two loaded Carvin cabs (I don't even care which ones...pick any two) for the price of one 4 ohm Eminence 3015LF speaker (not even in a cab). And I'd still feel like I'm getting a deal.
