Avatar 3 way 15/6/tweet

Very cool; if this is $500 + $50 shipping, what would a similar cab be from LDS?

As Ken posted, about 150 more, but in addition to the custom options (like ditching the tweeter, etc) the LDS is lighter. My 15/6 sans tweet is under 50 lbs, with a metal grille and metal corners. For me there's a big difference between 65 lbs and 50 or less. We'll see what the Avatar weight is.

Having not read all of the threads about vertical stacking of drivers and mixing of cabs and driver sizes, I still have a question for the people in the know. As it relates to Avatar, how do you think this cab (8ohm) might work stacked on a Avatar B212 8ohm non neo? Other than large and cumbersome, which is something I've been trying to go the other way on! I have always liked the way the Avatar B212 with the Deltas sounded.

Doing so goes completely counter to the reason for using a 3 way cab in the first place.

Not sure about using that lower end mid driver, etc., but the LDS build with the 18Sound super duper mid driver and an eminence tweeter with three way crossover is around $100-$150 more depending one options
That mid is probably an Alpha 6 CBMR, which has been available for OEM for years but is not sold at retail. I works very well, better than the Alphalite6 CBMR, and I'd specify it in my DIY cabs if it was available. With a good crossover it runs very smooth to 5kHz.

Thanks Bill! After reading my question back, I realized that even if it worked well, I rarely have a need to carry that much gear to a gig. I think selling the Avatar and my Goliath III 4x10 and staying smaller makes more sense.

Bill, how does that Alpha 6 CBMR differ from the LA6 CBMR that is available to the retail public?
It's about half the weight. I've never recommended the LA6 CBMR for that reason. I'm now using the Alphalite6 CBMR in the Omni series midrange horns with the LA6 CBMR as alternate choice because it's less expensive, but with a weight penalty.

I love LDS, but one huge advantage of Avatar is the lack of a 12-20 week waiting period.

I would definitely change that horn placement, but that's the only serious thing I'd push for. Everything else looks awesome for the budget and mid-level market.

If the 4 ohm woofer is a good item, buying this box just for the 4 ohm 3015LF and the nice CBMR midrange would be a good way to go for the DIYer. You could easily sell the stripped box for enough to make it a decent way to get a 4 ohm fEarful, and sell the CBMR too if you wanted.

Anyway, kudos to Avatar for hopefully starting a serious storm of quality designs.

I wonder which "chats" on talkbass that dave is referring to? I also wonder if Mr. Gallien reads the threads about the 15/6 cabinets. Both those guys build good stuff that is in my price and talent range (IMO and all that).

An inch taller and wider then a fEarful 15/6tube. I understand not liking this form factor for other reasons, but why all the fuss about dispersion? Isn't the point of having a mid driver that you don't need to worry about that issue as much? All things being equal, standing 6' + from the cab can really you hear a 4" height difference in the mid driver placement?

I don't think there is much fuss about the vertical dispersion difference -- there is fuss about placing the horn and mid so that the overlap in their crossover region can cause destructive interference (I think).

It does mean that you have to stand slightly further away (maybe a couple inches), but I wouldn't really worry overly much about that myself. Kickback stands are easy enough to deal with if you really must fit in a tight spot.

There was a thread back a ways (about 6 or 8 months ago). Dave posted a multiple-driver size cab on his website, and we had a discussion about how it missed the mark, since it wasn't a 2 or 3 way cab, only running different sized speakers full range. There was also no full-fledged crossover to go with it.

Dave came to the thread for the discussion. He pulled the cab design from the web page and said he'd look at doing something more along the lines of what we were talking about. He took advice about design, components and price point.

Also the mid and horn are on opposite sides of the cab. Imagine a 90* dispersion from each, and think how the sound further left of the cab will have more HF and less mid, and the opposite is true on the right side. Less of a good mix all around the room.

Not sure if that's completely correct but it's what I've gathered on driver spacing, I'm sure someone else could clarify...

The problem is that those drivers when placed side by side should be no more than 1 wavelength apart center to center at the crossover frequency. That's about 3 inches. Having them spread further results in severe comb filtering, exacerbated by having only 12dB crossover slopes. But I've seen far more expensive cabs with design errors just as, if not more, severe.

It will be interesting to hear the reports on weight and how this cab sounds.

A diversion, If I may, slightly relates to topic. Recently I went to hear a guitard buddy at his gig. I walk in and what do I see? Roll and tuck, baby! The bass player has an old Kustom with the 2-15 cab on stage. Gorgeous silver/gray sparkly roll and tuck goodness on head and cab. There's only one problem. He's using a Sansamp and coloring the sound. At break I ask a favor. "Would you just go straight into the amp for one song so I can hear that Kustom by itself?"

He says sure and does so on the first song. Wow, what righteous vintage tone! I notice he's smiling and he plays the rest of the set without the Sansamp. At break he comes over with a big grin and says, "It sounded so good I didn't want to change back." I've seen the same type of thing happen with old guitar amps too. Now, disclosure here, I'm quite old myself.

I left with this question in my head: Do those old amps sound good to us because that type of tone is ingrained in our memory from the hit records of long ago, or is something else going on?:eyebrow:

Thanks for your patience reading, if you got this far. I think about these things more in my dotage.:hmm:
