Avatar Cabs.

As for the "search first" issue and the people calling other's "search nazi's" saying they are ruining the site, please note talkbass's own stated rule:

"Please use the SEARCH function before posting new threads. Some topics have been beaten to death in previous threads . . ."

As for "Avatar, are they any good?" the answer is neither "yes" nor "no", but rather "beaten to death in previous threads". Lift your finger, all of the info is already there at your fingertips.

BTW: its been at least two whole days since there was a new thread on "what's the best way to fly on an airline with my bass" . . . . :rollno::rollno::rollno:

Honestly, I'm almost as sick of seeing responses like this as people like you are sick of seeing repetitive threads.

There's not much left that hasn't already been discussed, so if you'd rather see the forum die then by all means continue with these types of responses. Otherwise my opinion is to either answer the poster's question or just ignore the thread if you don't like repetition.

I've been reading/posting on this site for 9 years and I clicked on this thread to see what others have to say about Avatar cabs, not drivel like this..

Agreed

-1

Again, Ignore the post and move on to a thread that you find acceptable.

+1, thank you.:smug:

I've got a 212 and it sounds great. Plenty loud and ballsy for me. I like it.

I'd also like to try a pair of 210 cabs stacked vertically. Put a micro head (ie GK Shuttle, LMII, etc...) on top and you'd have an easy to transport killer sounding rig. (it'd look pretty cool, too)

I loved the older Avatar cabs with the ceramic drivers. They take A LOT of power and sound pretty decent as compared to more expensive boutique cabs. I'm not a fan of the Neo driver cabs! While the cabs are tons lighter, the tradeoff is it's power handling! My particular issue is I use an 800w amp split between a older B210 (700w) and an older SB112 (500w)! The newer cabs handle HALF that and I'd be afraid to use this amp with them so I'm glad I have the older cabs.

My neo210 has crackled from day one. I probably should have sent it back but was lazy and again... for the price it is great. I wouldn't play with just this cab but it does beef up the tone when used with my ampeg 15. Does it sound better than the swr 4x10 I used to use? Hell no. Would I deal with some minor sonic issues to not have to carry around a 97lb cab that barely fits in my car? Hell yes!

Bottom line is I can't mic the cab when I play live (but I can mic the ampeg) and my stage volume and tone is better with it than the ampeg by itself. Truth be told, if I had to play a show with just the avatar, I would. The breakup is not THAT bad and I play in an old school style rock band!

Avatars are great; i don't know if 2 210s or 112s would be smaller than you current 4x10, but I bet they'll sound better. A stack of 2 1x12" and an ultralight amp would be an easy load in, though. I've had a 2x12" of theirs, a 1x12", and planning on getting a 2x10" (the others are sold). Good resale price on them, too.

Sorry I can't offer any advice on the Avatars...but I came in this thread because I was interested in the responses, as I may be getting a 210 soon...and Avatar is at the top of my radar right now.

I do find it curious though that some dudes come into a thread with an appropriate title....and then they want to scold the OP for not searching. Why did you enter the thread in the first place? It's obviously going to be a thread that you feel has been beaten to death.

Yet you entered anyways!

It says a lot of what your real intentions are...and they certainly are not intentions to add to the discussion...but to interrupt and scold others.

Cheers,
BT

I agree. As I've said before, a forum is like a cocktail party: if you don't like the conversation in one corner, simply find another. There's no need to berate others for what they wish to discuss or rediscuss. A helpful steer to some good search ideas or results is the constructive way to deal with this if you like, best accomplished with a cybersmile.

FWIW I'm not impressed by Avatar, except for the prices.

using the search function may be listed in the rules...but I doubt anywhere it says the person that points it out should be condescending and/or downright ugly...there are helpful ways that point this out, and there are ways that aren't...beng condescending is not helpful, and turns people away from an otherwise very insightful resource....

I agree.

And I will add that new people to the forums may not get a chance to answer the old questions with their new experiences. Just because someone 20 years ago observed and posted his opinion on the difference between a J and P, does not mean that the topic is not open to more conversation. And when you get to the point that you think the conversation is over, that's when you should probably stop hanging on the forums and go practice or take up a new instrument.

I have searched for past posts that I have done before because I want to reference them in new posts. And they do not always pop up as easy as I think they should using the search function. Using key words they do not always pop up quickly and I resort to searching on my user name. Point is, search does not always pull out all the stuff.

+1 TO ALL THIS.
I got my firs Avatar cab last weekend and I’m not gonna start searching for old treads to give my opinion.

And so what if we see the same topic again; there is no reason to get all grumpy.

I once asked about the differences between the sterling and stingray cause they look the same to me and I have no music man experience, and I almost got my head cut off.

About the avatar, I just got the Neo 2 10 and it sounds pretty decent for the money.
Unfortunately I do not have any other cab to compare to so all I can say is that I’m happy with it.

I own a B410 (old) , a B210 (newer), and a B212 (newest, a replacement for the B212 I gave to a church). I play a 7-string on mostly gospel, jazz and blues gigs. For the big church gigs, I use the B212 4ohm. It is more than adequate. Lately, I have been using the B210 for most casual gigs. It more than suffices. They can handle the power of my Shuttle 6.0 and the lows and highs generated by my bass. Here is a clip of the B210 in action.

Not for a second would I cut the OP's head off. It's a good question, but as always, the more info the OP provides, the better the answers will be. In recent (past coupla years) I've had SWR, Mesa and Avatar (NEO B212, 112 and a slightly older 115).
- Are the NEO B212s good for 'old school rock?" Yes, they're not bad - Bongo active 4 string can strain it on the bottom E a little, but the passive Fender P sounds good. They're fairly uncolored.
- Are they well made? You betcha. Get the Line-X coating and never fear obnoxious drunks in seedy bars again. Don't fret about tolex rips unloading and reloading.
- Can they handle a Mesa V-12? Kinda...again, an active bass with a powerful amp can strain the drivers on a low E.
- Can they handle an LMII? No problem, they work well with MarkBass amps.
- Are they lightweight and easy to carry? You betcha.
- Does Dave at Avatar ship promptly and provide great customer service? You betcha.

Now, can you compare a Mesa cab to an Avatar? Well, the Mesa's going to be deeper and weight 50% more; it'll have knobs, attenuators, etc., on the back. It'll also cost 50% more. It'll sound about 25% better...so figure that in too. Depends on where you're playing and what you need to sound like.

Another good question:
I once asked about the differences between the sterling and stingray cause they look the same to me and I have no music man experience, and I almost got my head cut off.
Sterling's got more of a "jazz like neck," whereas Stingray's got more of a "P-like neck." Some minor difference in electronics; don't let the MM nuts go off on you. I can cop perfectly Stingray like tones out of my Sterling, but prefer the faster neck with roundwounds.

I guess I could update my Avatar cabinet opinion, it's been a while...

Based on a B410 Neo, B212 Delta, and two B212 Neos. I still think they are great bang-for-your-buck cabs. Quality control seems more suspect than most brands but overall build was pretty good on everything I've owned. They can handle a lot of juice and put out a good amount of sound. Overall tone is pretty generic and bland but certainly not bad. I wouldn't compare them to Aguilar, Bergantino, or any of the other high-end cabs, that's just apples to oranges. But if your on a tight budget, Avatar is hard to beat.
