Avatar Cabs.

I went into GC looking for a good quality, but affordable 15 inch single cab, to match an old GK rb400 that will be used to play country standards at practice. My best buddies' parents are getting on in years, and still enjoy making music. His Father is an accomplished steel guitar player, and it tickles me the way he asks me to walk the chorus of every song we play. Great ear training, and a chance to work on my lousy singing. I had thought that the Avatar and Dr. Bass cabs were very similar. From bassorama57's info, the Dr. Bass seems to be the custom made cab, made to the buyers needs. The single 15 was going for 200.00, but there was a noticeable buzz when played. This was after playing a Markbass yellow cone 15, and 4/8 cabs. I guess I will wait till their Labor Day sale. Don't want to spend too much, because it will be left at my friends parents house. I apologize if I have strayed from the OP content. Thanks for friendly, informative information.

I have an Avatar Neo 212, as well as an Epifani UL310....I love them both, and use them both! Sometimes, separate, with a Carvin B800, and sometimes together, with a Carvin B1500. The Avatar stuff would be great at an even higher price....but don't let them know that, they'll raise the prices!:smug:

OK, OK!@!@! I'll say it once. I'm sorry I jumped all over the OP for posting this thread. I just wasn't in a good mood the other day and I should of just moved on to the next thread, but I didn't. Hopefully we can quit posting about my comments and just move on to what the thread is about and that is Avatar cabs.

Personally I've played gigs with the B410 neo and it's an excellent cab, though I play thru Carvin BRX10.4 and BRX10.2 neo cabs. I went with the Carvin's because I had an account with them.

Sorry I can't offer any advice on the Avatars...but I came in this thread because I was interested in the responses, as I may be getting a 210 soon...and Avatar is at the top of my radar right now.

Brick,

I ordered my B210 as a "trial run" for Avatar cabs. I was unsure about ordering a cab that I wasn't able to play first, but I read a lot of positive stuff about Avatar around TB so I figured I'd give it a shot. I was looking to lighten my rig (previous cab was a 127lbs 4x10!).

Man, was I surprised! I was originally using just the 2x10 with my Shuttle 6.0 and it easily kept up with my band at practice (drummer, two guitarists, keyboardist and vocalist/acoustic guitarist in an unfinished basement). Now granted, we're not playing [any form] metal, but we're not quiet, either. :)

I wasn't blown away with it at first, but as the drivers broke in (custom Eminence Deltalite II's, btw), I kept liking it more and more. The cab warmed up a bit and got deeper/louder... the whole band was impressed. It's got a great punch and I really dig it.

I liked the 2x10 so much that I ordered a 2x12 not long after the 2x10. I'm still breaking in the 2x12, but it seems to "bloom" into the room more and the combination of the two cabs is pretty potent. I'm looking forward to putting it through it's paces and getting it fully broken in. :bassist:

My neo210 has crackled from day one. I probably should have sent it back but was lazy and again...

I first got my 2x10 and thought I had a bum driver too... turns out the noise I was hearing was actually air moving through the 1/4" jacks on the back of the cab (I use the Speakon connections). I read a tip on TB about plugging open jacks with earplugs and was certainly skeptical... but it works! A couple of those squishy foam earplugs, no more noise. Maybe what you're hearing is the same thing? Just a thought.

Hope I helped someone. :)

5sg.

Why doesn't Avatar make 15" cabs anymore?

I asked Dave this. His answer was there wasn't enough demand to keep justifying a special box just for a 1x15. He can't use the 2x12 box for a 1x15, and his opinion is the B212 eliminates the need for it anyway...

The B212 box is also used for the B410, and the B210 box is also used for the B112... I believe. So, it boils down to economics.

On this information I bought a B212 which caused me to forget there ever was such a thing as a 1x15 cab! :p

I've had four Avatar Cabs...2 410s (4 & 8 Ohm), a B212 (8 Ohm) and the SB112 (8 Ohm). Sold all but the SB112. They are good cabs. Worth the asking price and they can take a licking.

I bought the 8 Ohm 410 and 212 together thinking it would be enough for my band at the time. The 212 was unimpressive, so I sent it packing. The 410 however could handle most anything I threw at it. Found a 410 (4 Ohm) available locally and couldn't pass up the deal, so I bought it. It too was quite loud and could handle even a Low B adequately. It's NOT and 18" mind you, but it did very well.

The SB112 I have left is for practicing at home. It sounds nice and can compete with one guitar maybe two if they play at a moderate volume.

They are worth a look and listen and there's always a cab coming up for sale in the TB Cladssifieds...

Most of people have neglected to mention prices. I am guessing that most have bought their cabs new. Is there anyone here that has purchased used Avatar cabs with good luck? I would love to have a used 4/10 in black. I also noticed the custom coverings, are they roadworthy? Is it the neo speakers that make them great? Thanks!

I bought my two 2-10 Neos used for $300, they were about a year old or so. I have been using them for the last year and love them.

I am also a vertical stacker so the two 2-10s work perfectly.

You see them alot on craigslist here used - more for me!

There have been so many threads like this, I forget if I already posted to this one. But here's my $.02:

  • I have an Avatar 112 and 210 now, and have had a 410 and a 212 in the past.
  • I have a Bergantino AE410 now.
  • The Berg was $1200.
  • The Avatar 410 was $400.
  • The Berg sounds awesome.
  • The Avatar sounded really darn good. In fact, more like than unlike the Berg. Maybe a little less focused, and certainly with an inferior crossover and tweeter. But, in the same tonal ballpark.
  • I am totally confident that the average audience member - nay, the average musician in the audience - would be unable to appreciate the superiority of the Berg cabinet over the Avatar.
So I am definitely a fan.

Wow! I bet that double 2-12 thumps!!

Yes, it sure does thump and with running the SVT-CL @ 2 ohms with both 4 ohm cabs sounded pretty awesome.

99.999% of the places I play are too small for that set up. Even with my 830 watt rack and one of those cabs I can be overpowering. Nice to have the power when I need it rather than need the power and not have it.

I think you've given a pretty good rubric for the appeal of quality midrange gear of almost any type. If I may genercize it...

  • I have a Expensive gear now.
  • The Expensive gear was Expensive.
  • I have/Had Midrange gear .
  • The Midrange was less expensive.
  • The Expensive gear sounds awesome.
  • The Midrange gear sounded really darn good. In fact, more like than unlike the Expensive gear . Maybe a little less ________, and certainly with an inferior ______ and ________. But, in the same tonal ballpark.
  • I am totally confident that the average audience member - nay, the average musician in the audience - would be unable to appreciate the superiority of the Expensive gear cabinet over the Midrange gear .
So I am definitely a fan.

I think it's pretty great to live in time where brands like Avatar, Carvin, Peavey, etc can put out geat that is by no means the best but is extremely affordable and does a great job for muscians of any level (hobbyist, pro, semi-pro, etc)
