Double Bass Baby Bass megathread

I just posted a few rough tracks on myspace. These are from a recent session with a 60's Ampeg Baby Bass. THEY ARE ROUGH TRACKS. They are not mixed. I'll update when they are mixed.

The two tracks are Amor Artificial--Ray Barretto
and Senora Ley--Conjunto Classico

Alvaro, great feel and great tone! Thanks for sharing. Are you using a preamp? I'm sure it has a lot to do with the player, but the Sendel sounds great.

Cool pic, Stiles. The second pic isn't showing up though.

Funkfaker, I can't wait to compare the two either!

Thank you so much, Nick! No preamp there, but I had to set the amp gain really high compared with my bass guitar recordings.

I've just noticed your MySpace link. I'll check your recordings and let you know my impressions. BTW, let me know yours about your M.O.G bass after you get to play it. I'm really curious. :)

Alvaro & Nicky - Great tone on your recordings!

My Baby Bass original diaphram pup sounds nothing like those. It sounds uber "twangy" with the tone up, and when it's rolled off - only the "A" string sounds close to yours; but all the other strings have a weird mid range to them that gives it a honky sound a friend of mine said sounded like "cardboard" lol.

Since adding the Schaller magnetic pickup however, I can get a get a real close aproximation to the "Baby Bass" tone. Running through a Yamaha Nathan East NE-1 helps even more.

Thanks for the compliment! In regards to the tone--have you tried adjusting the pickup on your bass?

I always roll the tone all the way down. It sounds horrible with it up. :)

That seems to be a problem everywhere. Some time ago I wanted to assemble a band for an event in one of the universites I work with, playing a concert with Salsa covers from bands with just trombones in the brass section. I started writing the arrangements for four trombones (my favorite lineup), but I desisted from the idea after seeing that it was impossible to make the whole band to get together for rehearsing.

Yeah, it's tough, but SO worth it when everyone is there!!! :) I was lucky to find a group of guys who are 'mostly' available. I think now that the holidays are over, it will be easier to schedule rehearsals. It makes it harder since every instrument is so important and it is very noticeable when they are missing.

The travel basses look cool. Unfortunatly, my MOG Classic BB is going to take a bit longer than anticipated. He was hoping to have it done by the end of January. I will keep everyone posted.

btw, which gig bags are you guys using? I've seen the Mooradian and the Ray Ramirez, but I wanted to look at all the options.

I have been emailing back and forth with Mauricio and he asked me to let everyone know that he has been working very hard the last 3 months. Unfortunately, he could not find qualified workers to help complete the orders quickly and is working alone. He said that he is working to deliver the basses as quickly as possible, and that this is not a common occurrence for his company. He currently is training a few guys and they will be starting in March.

I just thought that I would post this info since his english is sometimes rough, and I thought you guys might want to know what is going on.

I have an update on my MOG Baby Bass... He got a slightly used bass in the shop, and offered it up for sale. It was almost exactly what I ordered (it is black around the edges instead of brown) so I went for it. It should ship this coming week.

I'm not sure what is happening with the one he was building for me. I know someone ordered one after me, so I am assuming that he will use it for that build. But I don't know for sure.
