A SILLY ASK:
why ,if these basses have the same system like the BB, not sounds with the same punch ? (i`m listened any records ,and ...no ...)
perhaps ,the punch is given by the attack of the fingers ...?:hmm:

Bobby Valentin plays one and gets a nice punchy tone.

I think some people didn't like the sound and modded them with traditional pickups....so maybe you are hearing a P pickup instead.

But, yeah, I think the attack of the fingers probably has something to do with it too.

Yes, the original scroll basses used a diaphram pickup similar in principal to the Baby Basses. When they were first being designed by Dennis Kager, he wanted to use a standard magnetic pickup like a Fender would. However, Everett Hull was sitill in charge at Ampeg and he wanted the scroll bass to be able to use steel and gut strings, like the Baby Bass and so the "Mystery" diaphram pickup was used. I think that they finally switched over to a normal magnetic pickup sometime after Hull had left the comapny.

i`m searching details about this pickup system in internet ,and only appears this post ...

other sally ask:
if someone play this basses ,changing the technique...example, in a vertical position and modifying the attack the fingers like a BB ,is possible ,this instrument give the same sound/punch ?

I`m considering seriously ,build a horizontal bass with this pickup system...but in other body model ,because ,here is impossible see these Ampeg basses to make a replica ....or if someone have a very very old body to loan ...

the dream of many bassist (latin ,specially) is , a hibrid bass with both pickup systems ...to play salsa ,and anglo rythms ...i`m very interested in this proyect !

other option for a body is, a Pbass replica ... specifly, like this :
Fender Sting Signature Series P Bass Body | eBay

this model have the space to work with the router (Nicky,finally i`m buyed other router ...) and install the other pickup system, giving the hybrid option.
