Hopefully you will get yours today. I have a solid feeling these Craft basses are amazing. I know they are the best looking J basses Ive ever seen, but thats subjective.
I did a session last night for a straight ahead rock tune on mine. I have, what Dr. Cheese called "reverse P" pickups. Well, I've never had these before but what I can say is that the tonal issues I had with Fender J's is gone. For example, the Fender gets thin real quickly when you focus on the bridge pickup. This does not. It stays warm and rich and still has that very familiar burp to it. So for this session, I did something I never did with my Fender or Lakland J - I went full on neck pickup for the Pbass tone. When I did that with a Fender it is a nice tone, but doesn't punch in the mids like a Pbass, so I never took it too seriously as a recording option. I was seriously impressed with this tone though. The first thing is that it is huge. It filled up all the lows and low mids perfectly like you would want. It also is really balanced so towards the end when the chorus peaked I went up the neck for some stuff and it retained warmth while singing through the mix. It is the perfect tone for a straight 8ths style rock tune, just gut punching.
On paper this is tough to describe, but this stuff is huge IMO and why so many engineers love P basses for rock. I just did not expect to get such amazing classic tones out of this bass. The reason being is when I center the selector and engage both pickups, the tone is ultra modern and hi fi. Its like a totally different bass, which is incredible to me. In terms of onboard EQ, I boost the bass and treble probably 3-4 clicks past the middle and the mids are about 5-6 clicks past. I essentially can leave the controls like that for any pickup setting, and when I cut solos on my own stuff I will probably dime everything because that tone is awesome for clarity in solos.
Just did the headphone test and the bass is super clear in it too. This is just head and shoulders above any bass I have recorded with tone wise. Add to the fact that it's by far the best neck Ive ever used and I have a winner. This just ups my intrigue for the passive 4 string anymore because it must be unreal. Ill have mine in mid august, but lets see what Quad says in the meantime.
