I'm afraid to tell, the first time I heard about Bacchus basses was today...
I saw this bad boy here on reverb

and I really think I want to have it :)
does anyone have experience with this model (global line) and especially this one with the Purple Heart fingerboard? is it worth it? (with shipping and taxes its approx 1000 EUR)
or should i invest a little more for the series wich are crafted in japan?

I have a wiring/control query for my BJB-62 bass. The controls are V/V/V+T, so a separate vol control for each pup, and a push/pull master volume+tone control.

When the V+T is down/pushed in, this acts as a master volume-fully clockwise =full volume, as normal. Pulled up, it acts as a tone control-anticlockwise=treble cut, as usual.

If I start with this down and fully clockwise that gives me full volume. If I then pull it up and turn it anticlockwise it cuts the treble as expected; if I then leave it there and push it in, it has cut the volume, so I need to rotate it clockwise to restore full volume, but doing that affects the tone and removes the treble cut. Is that how it's meant to work, or is it faulty? Is each part of the control meant to be independent of the other?

Recently picked up a Bacchus WL-434 - used, but in brand new condition along with its Bacchus gig bag, two allen wrenches (hex keys), etc. This was at a GC for $350 US and I more or less pulled a buy-it-to-try-it.

My old beloved passive parts Jazz was just too heavy for me at 10.5 lbs., but this Bacchus is much lighter at just a hair over 8 lbs. (haven't ID'ed the body wood yet) and it also has an on-board B/T preamp - just what I wanted in a new Jazz. Everything worked as it should right out of the box and the sound was rather big and focused (translation: strong without being especially boomy or clanky).

Given its unplayed condition, this instrument seemed like a rather good deal as soon as I received it. I didn't try it before buying because it was at a store many hundreds of miles away, but if it didn't work for me, I could always return it at a local GC. Jazz basses generally fit me well enough, so I wasn't too worried about taking much of a chance on this one.

I love supporting my local luthier, so I quickly took this bass in for a full setup. I also had a set of DiMarzio Area J's at home, so I had those dropped in, too. Some of the fret ends also needed a little attention, so I had those filed while my pals were working on it. Everything only made this bass better for me, but I don't mean to create the impression that it was in rough shape before it went to the shop. It's a decent meat and potatoes J-bass with the extra flexibility of the on-board preamp.

The neck on my Bacchus is a little on the thin side compared with my old Jazz, which has a Warmoth Jazz neck that's mildly more chunky. Since it's a lightweight and easy player with rather low action though, it seems to be working for me just fine. I also really like that this bass isn't at all boutique-ish or expensive. I'm not one to abuse my gear at all, but this is a cheapo import that doesn't need to be closely guarded like a museum piece or anything.

So far so good. There's my story. I first spotted a Bacchus Jazz in a nearby shop perhaps back in the spring that really impressed. It was one of their more premium Japanese models that had gorgeous materials and craftsmanship. This WL-434 is apparently from the Philippines and I didn't expect it to rival that first one I ever saw, but it was clear to me that this was a label to keep an eye on down the road.

One more note: I bought a used Sire Jazz copy with the on-board preamp, etc. earlier this year, but returned it after only perhaps two weeks. After comparing it with what I already had at home and finding out that it was also a little on the heavy side, I had no reason to keep it. This lighter Bacchus is on track to become my primary player.

It will not cost you 1000 Euro. It will be significantly less :)
